When did you find out the sex of your twins?

RannndiRannndi member
edited February 2014 in Multiples
I just switched my care over to a MFM. My OB said they could tell me at 16 weeks. My next ultrasound is with my MFM, and I'll be 15 weeks and 5 days. Curious if we'll be able to find out. My family wants to do a small get-together for a reveal that weekend (I'd rather not LOL). They're planning a tentative one, but I'm just wondering what you all think.

Re: When did you find out the sex of your twins?

  • I was super pushy and got my OB to do one at 14 weeks.  They could see one for sure and were about 99% sure on the second only because she had her legs closed.  We scheduled a 3d/4d ultrasound that same day and they came to the same conclusion- 2 girls. And they were right!

  • Our OB won't look until the anatomy scan (scheduled at 19 weeks). Hopefully ours will cooperate in a couple weeks and we'll know then. With our singleton, she was very stubborn, and we almost didn't find out. She was curled up playing with her toes, ignoring us. Actually, I was almost sent for a walk, because she wouldn't move at first so they couldn't get a good look at some of the other things they really needed to see (spine, heart, etc). Then she wiggled a little and it was all good.
  • I know three people who "found out" at 16 weeks only to learn they were wrong at the 20 week A/S. one of those couples even threw a gender reveal party. Afterwards it was a huge let down and they felt really stupid. I know lots of people do find out early and that's neat but there is no way I would throw a party based on that early data.

  • At 12w6d, during my NT scan, the tech said he is 95% sure it's a boy & a girl. I'm not running out to buy baby stuff just yet though. I'll wait for my A/S to confirm.

  • Thanks, everyone!  I called the MFM and they said they should be able to tell, especially because they're identical so chances are better to get a good shot of at least one of them LOL  And we're not having a reveal party.  It's just going to be grandparents and aunt/uncle (1 of each); which we'd tell them what they said anyways.  They're just excited, even for a guess.

  • We found out at our a/s. I didn't have any u/s between the NT at 13w and the anatomy scan at 19w since my boys were di/di.

I didn't ask at my NT scan for a guess.

  • We found out at my 16 week appointment with my regular OB, and then had it confirmed with my MFM at the 18 week scan. I wanted to be extra sure. :) I also compared the twins' ultrasound with my daughter's and WOW! Definitely having 2 boys :)

  • I didn't even ask about it until my a/s at 20 wks.  I had u/s at 12, 14, and 17 wks.   And while they told me that they were both boys- at future u/s I did ask the tech "Their both boys still, right?".
  • I work in an Emergency Department so the ultrasound tech did u/s on me periodically. She did one at 15 weeks and knew one was a boy but was unsure about the other.  Then at 17 weeks she did another and we knew for sure it was two boys.  My a/s at 19 weeks confirmed it.

  • The MFM made a nub theory prediction at our 12w appt and it was confirmed at our 17w appt.

  • You should be able to find out by then! I was 15 1/2 weeks and we scheduled an elective so our family could come and we could all find out together. It was confirmed at 19 1/2 weeks at my a/s, but at 15 1/2 weeks you could definitely tell there were no little peens :)

  • At 12 weeks (Although I think I was actually 13 weeks) the ultrasound tech showed us and we could tell they were boys...however, she would not 100% confirm it until 20 weeks and sure enough we had two boys! :)

    That's embarrassing.

We found out at 18 weeks. We paid to have an ultrasound before the anatomy scan so we could share the news with my family at my mom's birthday party.

  • 15w 5d. My MFM warned it may still be too early to tell but there was no mistaking the goods between the legs. We are having identical boys, so it was double confirmed that day. Good luck!
  • I voted 18 weeks though I haven't technically found out yet. I booked an elective u/s for Wednesday when I'll be 17w6d to find out the sexes. In Canada the techs can't tell you and doctors won't tell you until 21 weeks. Sometimes they'll tell you earlier, but they're not supposed to, so I booked the elective b/c I'm so curious!

  • At our regular OB appointment at 16 weeks, he could tell baby A was a boy but could not tell on baby B. So both weren't actually confirmed (b/g) until our A/S at 18 weeks.

  • They told me they could tell they were girls at 12-13 weeks but I did not believe it until the anatomy scan. Turns out the Dr. was right but ever u/s I always asked are they still girls? lol

  • We found out our B baby was a boy at 15w when I had an unexpected ultrasound due to bronchitis. They were concerned my coughing was causing my cervix to shorten so they wanted to check. He was hanging out with his legs wiiiiide open so there was no doubt. Our A baby had his legs crossed and wouldn't budge so we didn't find out until our 20w anatomy scan. I think at 15w5d you will likely find out if they can see, but its unlikely they'll mess around trying to get them to change positions until your anatomy scan.

  • The tech guessed girl on one at 16 weeks but the other wasn't showing anything. At 20 weeks she said two girls. I had her double check last appt at 24 weeks because DD keeps telling me one is a boy haha, still girls.

  • You could tell the "angle" fit the boy look at our 12w ultrasound for James, but couldn't tell on Simon - they still wouldn't make any guesses at that point, tho. At 15w 2d the tech got really good shots and had no doubt at all that they were both boys. I made them confirm at every ultrasound all the way until they were born because I was in disbelief (I have two older girls, so the idea that I was getting two boys out of the deal seemed too good to be true lmao)

This was totally us. Super early and I took with a grain of salt. But they ended up correct- 2 girls!
I agree with pp about maybe not being so quick for a gender reveal party (or at least not being embarrassed if it turns out wrong).
  • SS: They were pretty certain about Baby A at my 16w u/s, but B had the cord between his legs, so we didn't find out about him until 20w.

  • How do you already know they are identical? My doc said even if they are same sex will not know until born if identical or not

That's only if they are di/di. If they are mo/di they are ID.

  • Just as a word of warning, a friend of ours had an ultrasound at 15w5d and did a big gender reveal party the following Saturday. They were told they were having a girl. Fast forward 2 weeks when they had their next scheduled ultrasound and lot and behold there was a penis. Personally, especially if a gender reveal party was involved, I would wait until at least 16w. I saw the ultrasound pics and the one at 15w5d does look like a girl. There are even 3 lines.

Right.  Ours are mo/di- they share the same placenta and have a tiny membrane that separates them.  We knew that at 8 weeks.
