Bikes, trikes and wheels

My DH wants to get both LOs a tricycle and big wheel. We also got DS. Small electric motorcycle this past Christmas and wants to get him a bigger power motorcycle Ina few years and get DD a power wheels. I can't help but think this is all a bit much. He insists that they need both a trike and big wheel and that he wants them to have the power wheels. Anyway what kind of outdoor ride on toy do you plan to get your LO if any and when do you plan to get it? I don't know where we would keep all these things and how we would afford them in the dirt place.

My kids will never have the motorized big wheels. They are fun, but they are WAY too expensive for an outdoor toy that involves absolutely no physical exertion. If I had the money to burn I guess I might feel differently, but since I don't, I justify not getting one with the fact that I'd really rather them run and jump and pedal anyway.

Benjamin has a bike with training wheels, a scooter (not motorized), and a wagon that he pulls Emily and other toys around in. We do have a small cheap version of the power wheels that was a gift, but the batteries die very quickly and we hardly ever use it.

IMO your husband's list is definitely
    excessive!

ETA: Emily also has a cozy coupe. Forgot about that, because it hasn't been outside yet! It was a Christmas gift and she's been driving it in the basement until the snow melts.

  • Lilah got a power wheels for Christmas from my aunt. She can get her physical exercise the other six hours a day she'll be outside.

  • Yeah he wants to get each kid their own...as two of each. I am trying to convince him we don't need all of them and that we don't have the space for them all and here is no way we can afford them all. I like the idea of getting maybe one of each and letting them share and take turns.

  • We got her a scuttle bug for her birthday, which she plays with alot inside, and that we'll take outside as soon as it's warmer. I'm also hoping to get her a tricycle in the spring, but it'll depend if we have somewhere to store it. We're in a two bedroom appartment, and with the other baby coming soon, we have to limit the "big" toys.

We have this but with a steering wheel instead of bars.

It's motorized.  He got it this Xmas from a relative and he has used it 4-5 times.  Steering escapes him.

He'll probably get a bike with training wheels when he gets bigger.

He has a scoot bike with no pedals and a crazy coupe and a few other sit and push toys.

ETA you asked a question, d'oh!

I think that if your kids will fight over who gets to ride what having them each get their own would be good.  But cost and space will win.

  • It could be too early, but how about a balance bike?  Everyone that has them swears by them and they are good for kids beginning at 18 mo.

  • We have an enclosed porch, which serves as a playroom when it's warm enough. We store outdoor toys in there, and he can use these toys on the porch or outside. On the porch for wheeled-toys, there are a cozy coupe truck, a ride-on toy, and a push wagon. He's allowed to play on porch without us.

We also have the garage where we store his mini ATV (hate it - gift from MIL) and his balance bike. Those go in garage because they only get used when parents are around.

  • That list seems a bit excessive. Your h sounds like mine. He is always trying to compensate for his lame childhood.
I would have waited for Coop 's third bady, but my dad got him a John Deere power wheels for Christmas. ( I really wanted to get him the 2 seater mini Cooper)

  • I agree with PPs that it sounds like a lot - especially two of each! I understand each kid having their own bicycle but I would think everything else could be shared. I don't know anything about the electric stuff - I had an electric Barbie car as a kid and loved it so if someone wanted to buy something like that for Dagny I wouldn't object but I wouldn't spend the $ myself. We currently have a cozy coupe and a wagon - I assume we will probably buy a trike this summer although I feel like she is still too young to figure it out.
