Multiple Registries and overlapping items?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, I didn't see it anywhere...but I'm working on my registries.  I'm registering at Buy Buy Baby and Amazon.  The only reason I'm doing this is because a lot of people don't have BBB close by them, but it's a MUCH nicer store than BRU and they have a bigger selection of everything.  Plus they take Bed Bath & Beyond coupons!  I figured Amazon is a perfect substitute for anyone who isn't close to a BBB, as this was something people complained to my SIL about because they only had BRU and she also only registered at BBB.  Anyway...my real question is, if you have more than one registry, are you repeating any items?  BBB is my main registry because it's a lot easier to use and I can actually go to the store and scan things with the gun, but I still want to keep the Amazon option for people.  I'm still in the midst of working on them, but currently I do have some overlapping items - mostly the bigger ticket things.  Do you think that's a mistake?  My guess is that the majority of people will use the BBB registry.

  • I have BRU and Target registries but don't have overlapping items. BRU is my main registry, but Target had the monitor we wanted and some cuter sheets, blankets, towels, etc. I'd try not to overlap as people may be under the impression you really want two of something when you really don't.

That's a good point actually, I didn't think about that.  Thanks!

  • Even though ppl don't have a BBB mear them, they can still.order online and ship
Basically that's all Amazon is-they don't have "brick and mortar" stores. I don't see the issue with just registering at BBB only

My primary registry is at BBB buti do have a few of the bigger items on an Amazon registry because, frankly it's cheaper. I've only.told a few select ppl about this because I don't want the overlap

If you do end up.using both and have overlap, BBB's return policy is pretty good so I guess you'll just be returning items to the store.
  • I started a BRU registry, but every thing that I registered for there, I found way cheaper on Amazon, not to mention, there is only one BRU location in my city that's not convenient for most people.

So as of right now, I'm compiling my entire registry on Amazon because it's easier to make one list.  Then I'll probably start price checking against Target, since it's way more convenient for people  and put anything that they actually have in-store on a Target registry, and take it off the Amazon registry.  That way, people that wait till the last minute to shop (like I usually do), will have in store options, and people who shop early can order from Amazon.  Definitely no overlap though unless it's things that I'll want/need duplicates of.
  • BRU takes Bed Bath & Beyond coupons too, so I wouldn't let that influence your decision.  Also agree with PP's that I wouldn't overlap items.

  • Can't you register for BBB through Amazon? When we did our wedding registry I remember a "universal" add button for the browser that allows you to add items from any online store. I'm using Baby.list (a friend used it), which is the same idea. You can add items from any store, along with notes. It also lets people shop for the lowest price on a particular item across websites. They mark their purchase as "reserved."

I thought so too but the last time we went to BRU they didn't take the coupon. :(

We are registered at BRU and Amazon but we do not have any overlapping items. A lot of the gear and feeding supplies are on the BRU one, I'm using amazon for the items that the store doesn't carry like the swing we want, BOB accesories, cloth diapers, a ring sling, and most of the clothing I really want(we are team green so it's mostly just white/nutral NB stuff).

  • We have a BRU and Amazon registry and will do a few things from Target as well. We didn't overlap many items or if we did it was because it may have been cheaper at one vs the other. We decided before hand if we got duplicates we would return the store ones to get credit onwards other items. The BRU is what you could call our complete registry. The other 2 have supplemental items. Like cuter and cheaper towels or sheets and some toys at Target than BRU. Like @arekeweg said, if we notice something was purchased on one, we'll remove potential duplicates from other registries.

  • i did BRU and Amazon. I nixed Target that I had started because their return policy stunk and a good friend has a baby a month older and said she had a hard time with gift receipts, only getting credit etc.

Personally, I wouldn't repeat items. Amazon was fine to deal with but returns were a pain. You have to email them, they email you packaging slips to return items..it was fine for smaller stuff that I could drop in a UPS drop box, but for bigger items I thought it was a pain. I had to goto an actual UPS store since they wouldn't pick up in my area. So, I would do bigger ticket items where you can return at an actual store unless the price is just too good to pass up on amazon...although I'm finding that this isn't the case lately and their prices fluctuate..a lot lately

  • I have BBB and Target and I tried to limit the overlap bc it would suck to open Aunt Ednas gift from BBB and then open Aunt Sues from Target! If I did have overlap, then in the notes section I put "also registered for at BBB".

I was also doing Amazon, but I changed my mind bc a lot of my family isn't tech savvy... at all... and returns would suck.

    Yes.
Agreed. I have registries at both places, no overlapping items. I just picked whichever place had the better price for it. Amazon has an option for guests to mark that they purchased the gift elsewhere but BBB does not, so I gave my mom the log in for our registry there because I knew people would communicate to her if they purchased something elsewhere and she can just mark it off the registry. I'll update my registry after the shower too.

  • I made the mistake of overlapping a few things on our wedding registry because of things being cheaper.  I tried keeping track of everything so I could remove them from the other registry once they had been purchased.  My Grandma and my SIL bought the same item from the opposite registries on the same day :) So you can't really prevent it from happening but if you don't mind doing the returning, I guess go for it.  I would rather not worry about it happening, and not worry about having to return a duplication as much as possible.
I am registered at BRU & Target now, and I of course still worry about things being cheaper at one place than the other, but people will buy you what they want to buy you no matter what.  The smart ones will find coupons :)

  • I do have overlapping items on my registries, but they are only the items that I want multiples of. So instead of registering for two of something I put it on both. This was only because target is closer to one half of my family and babies r us is closer to the other half.

They should take it as long as its not expired.  If they give you a problem I would ask to speak to the manager.  BBB is a competitor coupon and they accept those so make them give you the discount!

  • Mine have a lot of duplicates. I will manually adjust the registry later, it's not that big of a deal. Most everything is cheaper on Amazon, and I also think it's good that they can price compare easily.

  • You can just keep checking your registry. If it seems like more items are going from one more than the other, you can always move some things over. I'm trying to keep things even too bc some people like to shop online and others like to just go to the store. It may be hard to gage the preference until you get closer to your shower!
  • I'm not really sure what the point is for having the same item on two registries.  Just make sure each registry has a variety of items in all different price ranges so if someone only looks at one, they'll find something to buy you.  If someone wants to get you a specific item and wants to price it out at different places, they'll do that on their own no matter whether you list it twice or not.

  • Just an FYI, it doesn't feel that great when you give something off a registry and then five other people give the same thing (not talking sheets/stuff you need multiples of, etc). Yeah, you will return/exchange, but why did I waste my time getting it?

  • I have registries at Target and BRU and have a lot of overlap. I figure people will shop at one place and not the other. If we get duplicates, we'll just exchange it. We did the same thing for our wedding and the only duplicates we got were actually from the same store.

  • Amazon lets you put notes on your registry for each item so I wrote things like "this is also available at Target stores for $25".  You could mention that it's also on your BRU/BBB registry that way.
Also if the person buys an item from your Amazon registry from another store they can still mark it on your Amazon registry as a "hold".  And you can add things from other websites to your Amazon registry.  Check out this link for info on how to do it.  So I think Amazon is better than myregistry and there is no need to have overlapping items on multiple registries.

I registered at Amazon & BRU. I did BRU because I know some people like to shop in person and some are not very internet savvy. But I did not have any overlapping items.  I also registered at Wal-Mart for my crib but then bought it myself and Target because of the gift card previously mentioned. I didn't tell anyone about those registries though.

  • Thanks for all the input.  I decided I'm just going to keep the BBB as my 'main registry' and then set up a myregistry to add the here-and-there items that BBB doesn't have (e.g. the monitor and rock n play that I want).  That way I avoid overlap, though, I don't think that would be the end of the world - I've seen it happen to others and it's not a big deal.  Anyway, for me personally any returns or exchanges will be a lot easier to do at the store, which is 5 mins from my house, vs. sending back to Amazon.

Yes! That's what it was. I thought you could combine existing registries, though, also? So they'd still be able to look your registry up in store.

Visiyibg ftpm july, just wanted to chime in here about myregistry.com - its great! and it let's you sync other registries as well as add things directly (eg things from etsy). And they have a nice feature to let you group items ( unlike the store registries which try to group them for you).

  • We registered at BRU and Target, and originally had no overlapping items. Between those two, we still don't, but then we decided to do an Amazon one also. All of my friends and family live half way across the country, and it's usually a lot cheaper/free to ship from Amazon than one of the other two (especially with Prime). They could get us a $25 item and ship it for free there, vs having to spend 50-100 bucks on one of the other sites to ship for free. Since I have to fly to my baby shower, other than the empty suitcase I will take with me, I won't be able to get stuff back. My sister was planning to encourage people to ship any large items. But it's also fine if they don't, my parents will drive them out when baby is born.

Anyway, keep an eye on your registries (unless you really don't want to know) and delete any duplicates once an item is bought. That's what I'm planning to do, plus I have made the hostesses of my shower aware that there are duplicates, so they can warn people if they'd like.

Buy Buy Baby.  I don't think they have them everywhere.  They're owned by Bed Bath & Beyond.  They're the best!  I just love how their stores are set up, how easy returns even without a receipt and/or if the item wasn't even necessarily purchased there are, and that you can use any coupon you want!  BRU isn't nearly as convenient.

  • IMHO I don't think it's a great idea to overlap items. As a guest at showers I always found it tremendously annoying, particularly when what I bought was duplicated by someone else from the other registry since I always make sure that my purchase is logged in as "done" on the list.

I'm registering with BBB and Amazon. BBB is the main one because people still like to shop at the actual store for baby showers and they have a better selection than BRU and a more favorable return policy than Target. Plus, I didn't like that Target doesn't have a lot in their stores. I use Amazon to fill in the blanks, but also to price check. If something is substantially cheaper online, that's where I'll list it.
