January 2014 Moms

"Mama, Hold me 24/7 please!!!"

I need some suggestions. Holland only wants to be held if shes awake, or asleep for that matter. This wasn't such a problem when my family was visiting and DH was home. Now its just me. She will not let me put her down in her RNP, swing, bouncy seat, boppy, or cradle. She just wants mama to hold her all day and even then prefers that I bounce her in my arms the whole time. The only time I put her down without her crying 10 seconds later is if she is completely exhausted and hasn't slept for hours. I have a very bad back and it is breaking from holding her constantly. Suggestions?

  • DD was getting to be like that after an extended period of visitors that ended up spoiling her (not really, since you can't spoil a newborn, but she really does love being held!). I ended up having to co-sleep with her for several nights because I simply couldn't put her down. What worked for me was swaddling her tight, rocking her and back pats while waiting till she was literally limp in sleep. As she got into deeper sleep, I would stop the rocking and patting and just sit still so in case she woke up, she would see I was still holding her. Then i would put her down ever so slowly into her RNP. I was consistent and did not pick her back up the moment she started crying. She sometimes cries in her sleep, but she's not really awake, so waiting 30 seconds to a minute would let me know if she was truly awake or not. If she was crying for real, i'd pick her back up, rock her back to sleep and then put her back down again....and again...and again....

Sorry I don't have many more suggestions! We're still newbies at this too and some days are better than others. Once she's sleeping consistently in the RNP, I'm going to start 1 nap/day in her crib.

  • My carrier has been a god send. I have a ring sling that I use when A won't let me put her down. she will wiggle around in it until I lay her on her side, belly to belly and then she passes out. It's the only way I can get anything done.
My friend swears by her ergo carrier and baby wearing.

  • Newborns are meant to be held. The only way to save your sanity is to give in to it. Find a wrap or carrier to make it easier on yourself and remember it won't be like this forever.

  • Another vote for the baby carrier!  It's the only way my kid naps during the day.

  • Exactly my issue for 5 weeks until he started Zantac. We figured out it was reflux by his arching back and frequent hiccups. Now he's calm and doesn't mind being put down for an hour or two. Make sure you rule acid out!

  • Lillian is the same way. I literally hold her about 22 hours per day and it is exhausting.  I know fromDS though it does get better eventually.

  • Thanks ladies! I have a friend who is going to let me try her moby wrap out and see if my back can handle it. Fingers crossed I can wear it and then we will both be happier.

  • Yes I am in the same boat. I am really interested to hear if the Moby wrap works for you. Good luck. Pl keep us updated !
  • Same boat here too. If I put her down in her rnp, she wakes up within an hour. If I hold her to sleep, she will sleep for awhile longer. We have an ergo, but I haven't used it much cause the newborn insert makes us so hot and sweaty, it gets annoying to put it on.

  • @cnctf - if you roll up a receiving blanket to place on bottom of ergo and place LO on top of that froggy- style, that should boost LO into a good position without insert. Works great for us.
