Single Parents

Opinions, please?

Good morning!

So, as I've recently posted, RSV has been going around the infant/wobbler rooms at day care for the last 2-3 weeks.  From what I understand it started in the infant room with a baby who's parents KNEW he/she had it and brought her to day care anyway knowing they weren't supposed to.

Last Tuesday evening Aria was starting to sound a bit congested so Wednesday morning I called her doctor right when they opened and asked if they could have a nebulizer ready for me to pick up around lunch.  Then at lunch day care called and asked me to come get her because she was running a low grade fever.  Before leaving to get her I called and made her a doctor's appt for that afternoon so she could get back to day care the next day, if possible.  At the doctor, she tested positive for RSV but was showing very minimal symptoms.  They said that, since RSV is already going around day care and everyone's been exposed already anyway, she could return after 24 hours fever free.

I called the day care director and told her what was up.  She tried to tell me Aria would have to be out 7 days from diagnosis.  I told her the pedi gave her a note saying she could return as early as the next day if she was fever free.  The director argued that they were trying to contain the RSV and that Aria would have to be out 7 days.  I asked to speak with her boss and she backed down and said that, since they suspected she had it last Monday (and never said anything!), that it would be ok to just keep her out the rest of the week and she could come back today.  Deal.

Aria is dropped off in the infant room and stays there until the wobbler room teacher gets there about 30-60 minutes later.  There are a few other wobblers who do the same.  So, as I'm dropping her off this morning the infant room teacher asks if I have her note saying she's no longer contagious.  Um, what?  That isn't what the director told me I had to do.  Not to mention RSV can be contagious for up to 4 weeks and there is NOTHING you can do...antibiotics and such are useless.  We go back and forth for a minute before I just said if the director has an issue I'm sure she'll be calling me.  By the way, she is no longer coughing or snotting up the place and has a follow up scheduled in 2 weeks.

I guess I'm frustrated because if they were REALLY worried about containing it they would have paid the wobbler room teacher to come in an hour early for a few weeks to keep the kids separated.  I wondered about this right when it started going around but didn't say anything because I figure they know what they're doing.  Secondly, I understand the director's point but wonder how she feels she can over-rule our pedi?  And third, I am pretty darn sure Aria got RSV at day care as she hasn't been anywhere else since it started going around.  But because her pedi did say she could go back last Thursday and the director said no, I don't feel I should have to pay for Thursday and Friday since she wasn't there.  They are also not updating the board that shows how many cases there are which is trivial, but still.  They are still showing 5 when there are now 8 confirmed cases.

  • I've considered it but also have to talk myself down sometimes and have to remember this is all new to me which is why I'm asking opinions.  Her day care really works for us overall.  She is happy there and her main teacher is really nice.  And at $150 a week it's a steal for what they offer.  Cheap, yes, but we're in a very low cost of living area.  :D  The hours are awesome and she can stay there until she ages out of the whole day care thing, which is years away. The pros currently still out weight the cons but they are starting to even out a little.  I just want to make sure I'm not blowing it all out of proportion.
  • If money is an issue, then maybe try subsidized daycare?  You can search the DHS website for approved daycares and those are approved by the state.  They have daycare centers and home daycare options.  Even if you don't use subsidized daycare, that list might be a good starting point for you.

  • lol. You think I should switch, too?  There are a couple other centers nearby.  I just drop her off pretty early so that might become an issue.

We might be moving this summer, too, so that might take care of that.  Although I'm not planning on changing jobs and would like her close to work.  Lots to think about!
  • My center opens at 6, what time do you usually drop her off?

  • I wouldn't necessarily switch over this, but I would talk to the director to make sure she's communicating the policy to her employees. It may just be that the teacher you talked to has a stick up her butt. LOL.

  • I drop her off at 6:30 but would probably drop her off earlier if I could.  And yes, the one lady has absolutely sat on a stick.  Absolutely.
