High-Risk Pregnancy

Would you call?

This might be a stupid question so feel free to giggle - with this pregnancy I am high-risk due to the issues DS had when he was born (I developed pre-e and DS was born at 26 weeks due to complications from reversed cord flow and IUGR), and they are really watching my BP, which was the biggest indicator of a problem with DS. It had been controlled with meds but today I was at my PCP and my BP had shot up again. I have a home BP cuff but since they are two different cuffs I don't know how accurate they are in relation to each other. Anyway, I am trying to decide if it's worth calling my OB about or waiting for my MFM appointment on Tuesday. When I was sent to the hospital with DS, he literally had hours to live and waiting two days scares me; at the same time, I don't want to be overly paranoid and call for every little thing because other patients have actual emergencies that need attention. I am probably way overthinking this, but would you call or just wait? This is why I should have just gotten a cat. (Just kidding... mostly)

Re: Would you call?

  • Did your home BP cuff have a similar reading as your PCP?  Either way, it doesn't hurt to call.  It's always better to be safe than sorry, and you don't want to stress out and raise your BP any further, right?  :)  Having your BP shoot up when you have a history of high BP is not being overly paranoid!  Hope everything is ok!

Thanks. My BP was similar on my home cuff. I'm trying not to take it too often because that will just make me more nervous. Argh, these silly children are aging me.

Also your sn cracked me up, @misschanandlerbong. Are you also a transponster?

  • I would probably put in a call especially given the pre-e history.

Thanks. I did wind up calling the on-call guy and am waiting for a call back. I appreciate the responses; I need a reality check sometimes with this stuff!

  • My doc had me bring in my bp cuff so they could take them back to back with the one in the office to check accuracy, you might want to try that.  I'm always higher in the office because I have to wade through insane traffic to get to my appointment and I get stressed.  To try and maintain an accurate reading, I always take the measurement first thing in the morning before I get out of bed so that I'm relaxed and in the same position.  This way increases in BP should hopefully be because of my condition instead of because of stress/food/whatever.

That being said, I can still see a variation of ~15 systolic from day to day, which my doc says is to be expected, the average is the key.

Thanks; it's a good idea to bring it in and see how it compares. I'll do that at my next visit! And I think I will try taking it in the mornings like you suggested so I can least see if it's going up or down according to one cuff.

  • My rule of thumb is, if you have to ask others whether it's a good idea to call, it's probably a good idea to call.  Your doctors would much rather have you call 50 times and have it be nothing, than have you not call once and have it be something.  Hope everything is fine!

  • Hi I am new to this board I had Pre-e with my DS back in May luckily I was only two weeks early. I noticed that you posted this a few days ago I hope you got the answer you were looking for. Having Pre-e the first time scared me, my OB said that since I had it once usually it doesn't happen again. However, I believe if you are ever uncomfortable with how you are feeling especially with BP problems ( and a history of pre-e) it is best to just get it checked it will make you less nervous and if there is a problem it would be better for you and your new LO to find out early. I know when we start trying for the second I will probably camp out at my OB's office Pre-e is nothing to play around with and I just want my babies and me to be safe. Good luck and I pray you have a safe delivery and a much better pregnancy experience this go around. : )

  • Thanks, guys! I did call and they had me come in and everything was fine. Usually I am not so skittish about calling but I don't want to become the girl who cried pre-e, KWIM? I want them to take me seriously if I have to call. But you're right; the MFM said he would rather talk to me 18 times a day for no reason than to leave me wondering if I should have called. Thanks for the advice!
