If you've dealt with recurrent UTIs in your child, please help

The girls in my bmb have heard all about this, but I am hoping someone else has some experience with this. I'll try not to ramble.
When DD was almost 11 weeks she got super sick, it was a kidney infection turned septic. It was absolutely terrifying. She went through a bunch of testing at the local children's hospital and they found no abnormalities except a labial adhesion. That was accidentally on purpose pulled apart during her testing.
We then decided on daily abx, bactrim, until 1. At 1, this December, she had a sono and it was normal so we stopped the bactrim the week before Christmas.
Then a few weeks later she started vomiting nonstop and we rushed to the ED, she had another severe uti, they didn't do a blood culture, but assumed it had spread and gave her two shots of rocephin and a 10 day course of bactrim. We retested at 12 days and it was clear.
Last Saturday she had a random low grade fever, so I requested a UA. They said it was fine. Then Tuesday night she slept for crap and Wednesday and Thursday and wasn't eating much, just wanting to nurse a lot. She still played, but was a little off. Then Friday woke up with a horrible smelling diaper. I called and requested a UA again. The nurse gave me crap, but I persisted. It was abnormal and now we are doing a whole new med.
I'm so fucking sick of her being sick! I use the sensative fragrance free wipes, wipe front to back, change her often, only bath a few times a week because of eczema, I just don't know how to help.
My sister told me to bath her with baking soda in the water, I'll try it.
I'm going to call Monday and ask for a urologist referral.

Has anyone been through something similar? She's only 14 months.

  • Not with my child, but something from when I was younger:

I had been getting back to back reoccurring UTI's which eventually led to Kidney infections. They wound up diagnosing me with something called Vesciouterial Reflux.

I had to undergo surgery to correct the issue but have been fine since then. FWIW it was a pain in the ass to diagnose at first, but once hey ran a test with the dyes to track my urine flow it was quickly addressed.

  • At this point, I would bring my child to see a specialist... Pediatric urologist?

  • My DS sees a pedi urologist. He was born with a multi-cystic dysplastic kidney so we've been through the tests. Even though he's been cleared for reflux he still has to get checked every year. Only one functions now.

Yes, you should see a specialist. It's a complicated system and in children the development can change.

Daily antibiotics are not uncommon in this circle. Most grow out of the issues and they decrease once potty trained too.

    Good luck.

  • We are potentially at the beginning of this.  My DS had a UTI at 6 months old.  I guess because they are way more rare in boys than girls, they want us to get the testing done.  We are going for the ultrasound on Friday and I am hoping everything comes back normal.  He was on a lot of antibiotics to deal with the UTI.

No advice, just company and hugs to you and your little girl!

  • She had all of those tests done and they were all normal. That's part of why I'm so exasperated.
    Thank you everyone.

She had a VCUG? Has she had a renal ultrasound? They found no reason for the UTIs? I would get a second opinion.
Yes, she had both and then another renal scan in December. The testing was done at DeVos Children's hospital, do I'm fairly confident they were correct.
I have an appointment next week to go over everything. I don't know who else I'd go to if I did get a second opinion.
