Swelling Already??

I'm 28w3d but this week I've gotten really swollen :( my legs don't fit in my boots, and my rings are super tight. Even my bump seems swollen and I've put on 7 pounds since my appt on the 4th. Should I be concerned.....?? Anything I can do to minimize the swelling?

Re: Swelling Already??

  • Try to go easy on your salt intake- I already have up wearing my wedding rings and am wearing a cheap sterling silver band. I believe excessive swelling is a sign of pre-e so you may want to chat with your MW/OB

  • I'm 25w3d and have had swelling for past couple of weeks. My hands a little but mainly my feet and ankles by the end of the day. I am a nurse so work on my feet all day so I think that's definitely making mine worse. Watching my salt does help. I've read it's time for some swelling but I still don't like it and want to watch it because of pre-e.

  • Yep, this last week I've noticed my rings are feeling really tight and my feet are swollen at the end of the day. I can definitely tell when I've had too much salt the day before.

  • my fingers are sausages and my feet are tamales. Water does help. Resting your feet helps too. Sometimes I can't help it though. It comes and goes for me throughout the day. Heat makes it way worse. Keep an eye out for other pre-e symptoms but I would still mention it to your doc at the next appt.

You can always ask for a foot massage. That can help too. :)

  • My ankles have been swelling for a few weeks now ... I'm on my feet all night at work so I expect it.

I have been swelling since 20 weeks. My ob said as long as my blood pressure is ok, no rapid weight gain, and it at least lessens with rest not to worry. 7 pounds doesn't seem enough to worry me but I also work in a cardiologist office and see people every day who swell so much they gain 3-5 pounds a day in water weight, not pregnant, but I would mention it at your next appointment to be on the safe side.

Try propping your feet up and resting and watch your sodium intake. Sometimes that helps. Sometimes it takes all night in bed and then comes back by the time I'm ready for work the next day. Its very uncomfortable! I'm so ready to have this over with. Sometimes May seems so far away but then I realize there is less than 3 months until my due date and I freak about how much still needs to be done! Hope you find some relief.
  • Definitely ditto what PP's have said. I have had a couple instances of swelling in the last week or so - mostly just my ankles and fingers. My BP is totally normal, so it's just my salt intake and fluid intake (or lack thereof).

  • Salts decreased and fluids increased. You could also try some tea to help you pee out extra fluids. You can also try elevating your feet when they get really swollen or try an Epsom salts bath for a bit in warm water. But id check in with your doc or midwife just in case it's something underlying

  • I just swelled up over the weekend, my shoes got super tight and I could barely get my rings off.  I had had a salty day, so I cut back for a couple of days and it got better.  However I still have some left :(  Bring it up with your OB next appointment just to be safe, but it's not unusual at this stage.

  • I read something recently( probably the bump emails or what to expect) that said swelling is normal, but if it is excessive and sudden you should contact your dr. 7lbs since the 4th sounds like a lot , quick to me( no offense and I don't know if you are catching up or the details). Do you consume a lot of salt? Of course all pp comments are right. Do those things, but it sounds extreme. Give a call to the dr, maybe?!
If I find where I read that I'll let you know.
  • Found where I read it. It was on the bump where it says "what size is baby?" It is 26 weeks a head of lettuce and it just is a quick sentence about it. Don't freak out if you think it's extreme. The dr may say it's normal, but it may feel extreme to you.
  • I started swelling in month 5 in my last pregnancy. Increasing your water intake and decreasing your salt intake are great suggestions. I also suggest going swimming. It definitely helped me. I was pregnant in the middle of an Arizona summer so the heat had something to do with it. I ended up with pre-e at the end but water, swimming, low sodium diet, and rest were key to managing it.
  • @bostongrl23 so has your swelling gone down or did you see a dr?
  • Call your OB.

I think you should go get your blood pressure and urine checked.  It's much better to be safe than sorry.

Other symptoms of Pre-E are visual disturbances (for me it was black squigglies that flashed around my eyes... they came and went.  Usually lasted only for a few minutes at a time... but they vary for different people)

I also had headaches and abdominal pain... but the abdominal pain was on the left, not the right which is where it's supposed to be for pre-e.

You may get all or none of these symptoms.  For me, except for the visual disturbances (which were relatively infrequent) I thought the rest of the symptoms were regular pregnancy symptoms... Within a week and a half, my blood pressure went from 140s/90s to 199/103.  Some of the symptoms started earlier in my pregnancy 30-32 weeks though... I gained 5 lbs in a week from swelling.

I don't want to think about what may have happened if my mother didn't make me go to the Dr.  (and then brought me elsewhere for a second opinion after the dr on call told me to wait 3 days for my next appt because he didn't want to deal with it!)

If your legs aren't fitting in your boots and you've gained 7 lbs, I'd be concerned. I don't want to scare you... but I really think you should call your dr.  Let us know what happens.

@tjkdlhb I was concerned and was hoping she was doing well. I don't think she has been on since she posted this. Hope everything is okay with her.
  • @deanna1313

I know... I've been thinking about her all day.

@Bostongrl123 Post an update when you can!

  • This whole last week (27th week) is my first with swelling. The feet a little but mainly my hands. My rings didn't fit starting Friday (tied them to yarn around my neck) and yesterday am they still wouldn't go on. A friend if mine at work says my hands look puffy... I had this same issue with my first so I'm not concerned. I'll bring it up Thursday at my reg appointment though.
  • @softservecity that sounds normal. I think swelling is supposed to start up soon, unfortuntely. I'm sure it's annoying, though. The OP just had some extreme symptoms that were a little concerning.
  • Hi ladies, thank you so much for thinking of me! I have an appt on Friday, and the swelling definitely seems to have gone down, or I should say it comes and goes and is worse at the end of the day. I already drink over 100 ounces of water a day, but I probably should cut back on salt. I've had lots of BH, but those are pretty normal for me. I will call them tomorrow and tell them what's been going on and see if they want me to come in before Friday. I hadn't even thought of pre-e!! I will keep you guys posted!

Hoping she has been in and been checked. Good chance it was normal swelling...but I ditto @tjkdlhb with the Pre-E concerns. 7 lb in 8 days is a lot, and the swelling is concerning.

FWIW, I had mild Pre-E (was dx and induced in 37th week) and my only symptoms were gaining 4 lbs in a week, protein in urine and a bp of 140/something. I never saw spots, never had a headache and never had abdominal pain. Symptoms truly can vary à lot.

  • @bostongrl23 good to hear you're doing well. Good luck at your appointment and I hope everything turns out well:)
  • Yep... feet and ankles constantly swollen, but the doctor keeps telling me my BP is fine and I'm very healthy! Like PPs said, watch the salt intake.
  • Water, water, water and protein. Protein is supposed to be really helpful for preventing/reducing swelling, but I haven't had the chance to test it out yet.

  • Got home from a quick appt today, baby girl hadn't moved all day so went in to get checked out. Baby girl is fine ;)
My MW isn't worried, the swelling isn't bad and although I've gained a lot of weight in a short time, my BP is perfect and everything else looks good. Overall I'm still on the right track for weight gain so she thinks I'm just catching up. She also told me to cut back on sweets and limit my salt intake.

    Thanks for all your advice!
