Cranberry

Hey does anyone know if it's ok to take cranberry supplements or cranberry AZOs while pregnant?

Re: Cranberry

  • I had a uti a few weeks ago. Doc recommended azo regular strength, unsweetened cranberry juice (very acidic I drank it out of a shot glass) and put me on macrobid. The azo is totally safe and within an hour that awful sensation in your bladder is gone. Beware your urine will be dark orange and will stain your panties and toilet bowl. Wear a liner and scrub the toilet when you're done lol. Azo honestly works wonders. Every now and than I have a little bladder discomfort and I'll take the pills to calm it down. You should still see the doctor but the pills should help you till you get to the doctor. Good luck!

  • I have a UTI right now and my OB said I could take the tabs (I have GD and the juice is high in carbs). Thankfully my antibiotic is working and I didn't need to take the tabs. I'd still talk to your OB to make sure it's okay for you

  • Keep in mind that cranberry juice helps prevent utis due to it's high acidity. If you are in the middle of a uti (or recovering), and your bladder lining is still inflamed, it will only irritate it more and increase the inflammation (it's that same irritation that is it's mechanism for prevention). Most doctors are quick to tell you to down the juice (or supplements) but for whatever reason don't think it through to that level. Just be careful using it if you still have irritation or pain. In between, for prevention, it's great.

  • I take a cranberry supplement daily for prevention because of previous issues with UTIs. When I got pregnant, my doctor said I could continue to take them, and should so that I can continue to prevent them. But as others have said, supplements do not cure an existing infection so you should see your doctor if that is what you are concerned about.

  • I know AzoYeast was not recommended by my pharmacist. I used to take it daily as a preventative. I am not sure about cranberry. I have been drinking tons of 100% cran juice since my BFP.
  • I've never taken it while pregnant, but I have taken many cranberry pills in the past. I've found that different brands have different strengths of cranberry extract in them. Hope this helps and you feel better soon.
  • Thanks y'all....I could feel one coming on, and really didn't want to be miserable all day today and tomorrow being a holiday! Great advise and info!
