Bedtime bottle

So I have always nursed LO before bed and she only gets bottles when we're out doing errands or staying with Gma while we go to dinner...and she always grazes on the bottle rather than drinking in one sitting.
I need to get her use to taking a bottle before bed because we have some evenings coming up where I won't be able to put her to bed.
Question- how many oz. do you give LO before bed?? Does your LO still need to be burped?

Mine is a chow hound and gets 8oz before bed. Normally his other bottles are 6-7oz every 3 hours. I will put him on my shoulder and burp him after, but he usually burps half asleep.

    ETA: he is formula fed.

  • About 5oz of BM if I'm not nursing her before bed.
  • Around 5oz of BM and still burp. She's very floppy but I can usually get a burp out while I stand with her on my chest.
  • 4-5oz BM before bed.
  • DS only takes 4 oz bottles.

A bf baby should really only have 5 oz max at a time/per bottle.

  • 4oz of Formula or 5oz of BM for bedtime. And he usually does not burp after if he falls asleep. But I still try everytime.
  • Thanks! That helps guide me!
  • You could also try a faster flow nipple, it didn't have a negative impact on BFing for me. He got tired of eating with the newborn nipple and does much better with the faster flow now. He used to fall asleep mid bottle befor and now he finishes it

It has to do with the size of the baby's stomach. BM increases is calories not quantity over time.

Formula always has the same make up, so you have to increase the quantity.

BM changes to meet the needs of the baby so that the quantity stays about the same.

A lot of advice is based on ff, which is not good advice for bf.

If baby is hungry they will eat more frequently, not larger amounts.

Day or night LO gets 6oz of BM if I'm not home. He eats when he wakes up though, not right before bed.

ETA: LO still gets up once a night to nurse before morning.

  • O gets 6 oz BM at the sitter and if he gets a bottle before bed.
But I agree w/ PP about looking into a faster flow nipple.

Thanks for the info. That's weird. Sometimes she eats 4 oz but at night she'll eat up to 5. If she doesn't she cries and won't go to sleep. Good to know.

  • The faster flow made a huge difference! She'll actually take a full bottle and not graze throughout the 1+ hour.
Haven't tried bedtime but planning on it soon!
    Thanks for the help ladies!
  • 8 oz for his bedtime bottle! The rest of the day he has 4oz bottles every two hours.

  • If he gets formula is about 6 oz before bed. Other bottles are 5oz. I try to get a burp, but he pretty much does it on his own now.
