Washing hair everyday....harmful?

I am 16 weeks and up until now have been washing my hair every day with head and shoulders. Well, this morning I decided to take a look online about shampoos and it was terrifying. So now, not only am I worried about the ingredients in the shampoo having harmed my baby but also that I wash my hair everyday! Help, some advice please!!

  • Well, washing your hair everyday isn't always that great for your hair.  It can be very drying.  As for your physical health and that of your unborn baby think of all the women who wash their hair on a daily basis, if it was harmful we would know.
  • Well you are not the only one. I wash my hair with head and shoulders as well.  I have such issues with my hair like their is a film on it all the time no matter what I use.  It is the only thing I can use that gets it off.  I wash every other day.  I also have to spots by my forehead that is always flaking, I have gone to dermatologist and the meds that they give me I cant use being pregnant, so I have to deal with it, head and shoulders doesnt even help it.

If you are worried talk to your Dr dont rely on Dr Google, it does give bad advice or will stress you out. lol

  • I saw this about dandruff shampoos

Can I use a dandruff shampoo to treat my flakes?
Shampoos for dandruff that use coal tar or salicylic acid should not be used during  pregnancy, since anything applied to the skin can potentially be absorbed. Shampoos that use selenium sulfide are safe to use during pregnancy as a shampoo only. Shampoos that use use zinc pyrithione, such as Head & Shoulders, are safe to use during pregnancy.

I always take it with a grain of salt what I read.  If really worried I would ask your Dr.  Maybe start washing every other day that might help as well.

  • I asked my ob about it and he said it was fine. My head gets really itchy in the winter so I use Selsun blue.

  • Are you looking at reputable sites? There's a ton of crazy on the Internets, a lot of the "natural health" sites in particular you need to be really careful about who is running them.

  • I don't think you've harmed your baby at all. But I don't wash my hair everyday because if God forbid I don't for one day then it gets super oily, I feel that washing my hair all the time washes away the protective natural oils that cover your hair and that causes your head to over produce these oils to substitute for the oils lost during the washing.

just like your skin, if you don't hydrate it enough and leave it to dry then you will have excessive oil production in some areas which lead to acne/black heads/etc...that's what I think at least

  • I wouldn't worry about that you have done any hard to baby, it's unlikely

however you can in the future change to shampoo/makeup that's phalate and sls,etc free if you're worried about what soaks into your skin (I am)

  • It's not great for your hair probably, but you and your baby will be fine. If shampoo was so dangerous your doctor would have told you about it.

I can really recommend using baking soda for cleaning your hair though. Google it a bit and see if it's for you, most people (including me) get great results, and it's all natural.
  • as for daily washing affecting LO I don't think you have to worry about that. for me I have been unable to wash hair every day just because my scalp has gotten SOOO dry, and I can't stand it. unless it's bothering you, or your dr. specifically tells you to avoid it, I wouldn't worry about it.
  • I have started washing my hair twice a week instead of every day and it has gotten so much healthier... Dry shampoo is your friend.

    But your baby is fine.

    This, totally and completely.
