Confused....help:(!

Okay ladies I need some opinions here. I see a maternal fetal medicine for my growth scans... At 32 weeks my baby was measuring about 10% tile. 34 weeks she went under 10% and her abdominal circumference was measuring at 5%. She's been under 10% for the past 6 weeks but gaining an average of 8-10 ounces every two weeks. This past week at my MFM appt they faxed over to my OB that they want to induce me next week at 37. When I got to my OB appt they said she was going to hold off until 39 weeks instead...Why am I getting two different sides here..I'm so confused ...lost I don't know what to do. Can I just go with MFM and have them induce me or does my OB have 100% say in this. I feel like MFM has more experience since they are doctors for high risk. Any mothers out there with similar stories?!

  • That sounds very confusing, and I'm not entirely certain I 100% understand your post... But if it were me, I would be adamant with the MFM and OB, and ask them to spell out what is going on, and why they're saying two completely different things. Don't be a passive participant in your pregnancy; it's your baby, and you need to know what's going on. Also, if your LO is only measuring in the 10th %-ile, which I believe is very, very small, why wouldn't they let you keep him/her in for as long as possible? Why induce at all, until you're over the 40 week mark?

  • You need to ask these questions of both your care providers.you need to understand and be comfortable with what they are telling you. It would be irresponsible and potentially dangerous to solicit your own medical advice about this from strangers on the internet.

Not a professional opinion.. But just because you're in the 10th percentile doesn't mean your LO is in danger. In order for my son to be in the 70th someone has to be smaller. Usually it's when your child starts dropping Percentiles rapidly or dramatically that they get concerned. For example: DS was at the 5th for birth weight, and has/got to/is 50th now since he was about 4-8 weeks. But when he was at the 5th nobody was worried. Usually a jump like that would be a sign of trouble but I had HG more severe with DS so the jump made sense to the ped. If DS had gone from 5th to off the charts we would have worried.
So really, percentile has no real bearing on LO's overall health? Interesting... I mean, that explanation makes total sense, I just thought that smaller babies generally have more things to worry about than the bigger ones. Maybe just FTM delusions and misinformation over the years. :)

  • My only concern is that babies under the 10%tile have a higher risk of still birth after 37 weeks. She's measuring 3-4 weeks behind...And not to mention her A/C is measuring under 5% is a little scary...Why would a high risk specialist want to induce and my OB doesn't. Doesn't make sense. I was sent to see a high risk doctor for a reason not to shove their decisions to the side. Makes me angry :(
  • The fact that baby was measuring 10th% and is now 5th% at the abdomen might mean that baby is falling down the chart. I'd want my OB and MFM to be on the same page. Ask them to clarify their reasons for when they want to induce (37 vs 39 weeks).

@anonymousmotherofone If they think baby isn't growing well they will often induce small for dates or intrauterine growth restriction babies (SGA or IUGR) because they will often grow better outside than inside at this point.

This. Take charge. You need to call your mfm and have them explain. With my hx and experience I would go with the mfm. Demand them to work together for your baby's sake.

  • I also recommend you take charge. My high risk OB and reg OB have been in constant contact throughout my pregnancy. I will say that my regular OB almost always defers to the high risk OB if there is a question on something, and that I would as well.

That said, I've noticed the high risk OB seemed to feel more comfortable with early delivery than the reg OB. I imagine this is because the high risk OB has to do more early deliveries.

  • My midwife always goes with the MFM's recommendations, so I agree with what others have said about calling both offices as soon as possible and getting an explanation from each as to why they disagree.

The MFM doctors give us the reports and their opinions but they rely on my OB/GYN for the final decision.

If MFM had had their way I would have delivered by c-section at 33 or 34 weeks.  But Ob/Gyn didn't find that there was all that much to be alarmed about and told me that he would rather wait.  I trust my ob/gyn.
