s+tm - giving breastmilk to older child?

Anyone planning to do this? DD will be ~20 months when DS gets here. I stopped bfing her at 15 months because it was taking a toll. I'm thinking it might be nice to still be able to give her some breast milk (depending on supply). Has anyone else done this? What's the best way to do so? Off to do a little googling...

  • Visiting from April! My son is 2.5 and I nursed him til 19 months. I totally plan to sneak breast milk into smoothies and things where he won't notice, if I have extra pumped! It certain won't hurt anything!

  • My son is 2 and still nursing (anywhere from once a day to once a week, so we are near the end), so my opinion might not be one you're looking for. But yep, I'm planning on it.

  • I plan to tandem nurse, at least for a little while, if possible.  DS was still nursing when I got pregnant this time and until third tri, there was still a little bit he was getting.  Now I'm having major bfing agitation with him, but trying to let him nurse for a minute a couple times a day, just so he doesn't forget how to latch.  From what I've read and talked to my mw about it, you can basically just nurse the new baby til they are done, then let your older one nurse.  I'm a little uncertain though if this is only after your actual milk comes in or if you can do it right away.

  • I don't think I will give him any in any way other than using it as a topical to clear something up. He will be almost 2.5 and self weaned around 20 months. I'm with @bearsbearsbears I had a hard enough time producing enough for DS and really don't want the stress.

  • I considered pumping and giving some to DS1, but after watching me pump and the baby eat, he is convinced that "boobie juice is for babies". He has zero interest in it so I'm not going to push it.

I'm not even talking about production-wise (although I'm sure that would be challenging).  Just the thought of having to nurse a newborn and a toddler makes me want to cry with exhaustion.

    Oh good point!

I'm actually hoping that nursing both will help my production. Because DD1 can empty me out after DD2 is finished. So then my body should think it needs to make more milk. Although DD1 really only nurses right before bed and for comfort if she's sick or gets hurt. So it probably wont actually do much.
I was hoping for something similar, but I'm definitely a bit worried it'll be too much. Then again, I feel like nursing at all while having a toddler (whether nursing the toddler or not) is going to be a lot of work. Heck, having a second baby itself is daunting.

I'm not looking forward to feeling all touched out, but I'm dreaming of a super milk supply, which almost makes up for it in my head. ;)

  • Thanks for the replies so far! I def don't want to give it to her from the source, maybe just in smoothies or something as pp said. No desire to keep up with demand x2 just thinking 8oz a day (once supply is established) for a little extra nourishment/good boob juice stuff.
