need your help- constipation!!

I am stuck at work and H is alone with the baby. I guess he has been straining to poop and only small, hard poops are coming out.

I told him to try the gripe water, but I didn't think it would do anything. I also said to bicycle the legs, put a warm blanket on his belly. His only option to leave and go get something would be from Wal-Mart (ugh!). (I only know what we do in the nicu which is giving a glycerin suppository)

So any home remedies would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: need your help- constipation!!

  • My pedi said you can do 1tbs of karo syrup per 2oz of formula or apple juice. Some people are not comfortable with that. I have done it and it's worked for us.

He could also try the thermometer trick too.

  • Our LO is on soy formula, which causes constipation. Pedi said to give him 1-2 oz. of water or 100% juice to get things moving. I haven't had to do that yet, but I have noticed that when he hasn't pooped in 1-2 days, a dose of gas drops (not gripe water) seems to do the trick. Poor babe, that sucks so much. Good luck!

  • The Little Remedies gas drops make LO go within a half hour every single time.  Unfortunately he has frequent issues with constipation.  I have heard of the Kayro syrup thing before too.  Apparently my mom used it on me when I was a baby and she swears by it.  She keeps telling me to use it on LO but it seems really strong for a baby.

  • I will probably stop by the store on my way home in the morning and pick up some juice and gas drops.

He was on Sim Adv and we switch to Sim Sens after I noticed a pretty large increase of spit ups. And now it seems since he's eating Sim Sens. there is more constipation! He had the same problem the other day but finally had a normal poop later that night.

Thanks ladies, hopefully H survives the night lol.

  • My first had this problem a lot and we had to do the glycerin supps. It sucked but was all that worked for her. Sorry, I know how miserable they feel when they can't poop, so sad. :(
  • Constipation queen here. We gave prune or apple juice(2 oz). Also milk of magnesia is amazing. 6 ml a day. Pedi recommended both. We have had no problems with either one.

  • They sell children's glycerin suppositories at any grocery store. We've had to use them twice. We actually just cut one in half and didn't even place it all the way in, just the tip (haha) for about a minute and lookout below. Poops errywhere.

How long ago did you switch formula?

Dd had a hell of a time the first two weeks. After that she got into a routine. Now I get at least one a day from her.

We were on sim sens for awhile, then went to advanced for maybe 3-4 weeks, we have been back on sensetive for less than a week. That's gotta be a culprit.

Texted H earlier, baby finally had a normal consistency poop, yay! Still wasn't a very big amount so I'll try tomorrow to see what I can do.

  • One thing that can help with constipation is a daily probiotic.  I use Udo's infant formula, it really helps with digestive issues.

  • 1/2 ounces if pear juice in the bottle. A rectal thermometer usually works too. Our LO gets a little juice every morning and is on gerber gentle.

  • I put dark Karo syrup in every bottle. Keeps her regular. I've also done the thermometer trick (before Karo) and I've purchased the kids glycerin suppositories, but haven't had to use them yet. Also rubbing the clockwise circles on the belly helps get things moving for dd.

A couple hours after I gave LO Little Remedies gas drops he FILLED his diaper with poop. Coincidence? I think not!
