Breast pump tubing

Long story short I could not get my insurance to cover a pump of any kind. I did however find a medela double electric pump in style that someone was selling. Although it was out of the box it had never been used. Everything looks great, but I am still trying to sterilize everything. I was wondering if any of you ladies had used the medela steam bags. It says you can place the tubing in them, but I just want to make sure that no water residue is left behind for bacteria and what not to grow inside of it.

I was also wondering do I need to steam clean the white seals.

Re: Breast pump tubing

  • Yes clean the membranes the milk comes directly in contact with them! I never steamed my tubing, but you can get new tubing online.

  • The tubing is new I am just paranoid that I need to sterilize everything lol. The pump hasn't been used, but because it was out of its box and placed in storage I want to make sure everything is clean. I plan on using the steam bags for the nipples, breast shields, and the bottles it came with I just wasn't sure about the tubing.
  • Sorry to hijack this thread, but also regarding tubing: there's some condensation in mine just from normal use. Does anyone know if this is ok and/or how I can get it out?
  • You can steam them, and then hook them up to the pump without the bottles, run it on high for a while, and it will dry out any moisture in there.

  • I used to swing the tubes around and get the majority of the water out and then hook it up to pump.

  • This. And, I would clean mine by squeezing liquid soap in one end, then I'd rinse them out in the faucet. I'd hang them to dry on my upper kitchen cabinet's hardware. That way, the water would drain out. (Make sense?!?) After 3 kids, this is the cleanest I ever got my tubing!
