Yesterday, my DS's doctor has confirmed that he has level 1 autism, which is considered borderline. She says that he can be taught like other kids, but it will be a challenge. So I want to work on getting him a head start on learning.
I wanted to know if their are any other moms who has autistic kids and how are you managing educating them?? Do you use old-fashion methods or iPad, etc?? He's 3yrs old

  • I use abcmouse.com for my son and I also regular workbooks and he does well with both

  • De has mild autism as well. She has really strong academic skills so we don't have to worry too much in that regard. Her real struggles are with language and social skills and we work on them the old fashion way.

  • Welcome! I second the opinion to focus on the behavioral and the social while the brain is really pliable.

My three-year-old is too hard to engage with him when he's staring at a screen, so he only has access to the iPad when he earns it for getting through less-preferred tasks.

    Hi, and welcome.

We have stayed away from screens/minimized screen time, even for educational purposes. Frankly, engagement does DD1 more good than looking at a screen; and her excellent memory has made academics a strength so far, to the point that she is reading at least one year above grade level.

She did one year of preschool in a "co-taught" classroom, which in my district means a room with both typical and SN kids but slightly more kids with IEPs than a regular classroom; led by a SpEd teacher with three total teachers instead of the regular two. A great situation for her to start, honestly. Then she went to a regular preschool class, and now she's in mainstream kindergarten with minimal support and doing great.

Academics/education have been the easiest part. The social skills and etiquette that go along with cooperation, working in pairs or groups, communicating with peers who aren't going to be as patient as adults -- those have been the challenges and will be for the foreseeable future.

  • Hi,

My 3 y/o was just diagnosed yesterday as well, but it was an educational diagnosis instead of a medical diagnosis, so we don't know the level. If I had to guess, I'd say it was very mild. Our main concerns are social skills and communication, along with some sensory issues that have improved on their own over the last couple years.

He is in a typical preschool right now and the only things that he struggles to learn are social rules. He knows colors, shapes, letters, numbers, counting, all the typical things that a 3 y/o "should" know. But yet he struggles with sitting in one spot, taking snacks away from peers, keeping his hands to himself, etc. He communicates well enough for his age because his vocabulary is large but he has a collection of phrases that he uses appropriately depending on the situation, but he lacks a lot of spontaneous speech. So right now, we are focusing our efforts on social skills and the use of language.

We really limit screen time. He has a Leap Pad, but he doesn't seem to "get it" yet. He has trouble with auditory processing so he doesn't listen to the instructions and just ends up jabbing at the screen with the stylus. When he watches TV, he usually zones out and watches/listens without actually paying attention to the story.

He is a young 3, so I don't have a dedicated study time or anything. I generally follow his lead and don't try to push anything. He loves puzzles and building things, so while his play is very limited, there are a lot of ways I can teach him things. Letters were the last thing he learned and it was very recent, and only because he became interested in an alphabet puzzle.

    Good luck!
