Juicing; ideas? Nutrient benefit?

So this is kind of NBR but my husband and I have been juicing lately. Things that don't sound appetizing (the health stuff) like carrots, spinach, etc have been great with the fruits we have juiced up. Any other mamas to be out there who juice? Looking for good combinations plus any recommendations specific for pregnant women. Thanks!

Re: Juicing; ideas? Nutrient benefit?

  • I love juicing! It's great knowing that when you juice, you can pack in a ton of intentional delicious nutrients without worrying about whether you're getting enough fruits/veggies for the rest of the day. I loved doing a blend of 2 green apples, a few large handfuls of spinach, a few large unpeeled carrots and a chunk of ginger. That's a good basic juice that actually tastes good thanks to the apples.

  • our go tos are-

A good bit of spinach, 2 stalks of celery, a pear, and 2T of flax seed

3ish good medium carrots, ~1/4C fresh pineapple, a piece of ginger the size of your top thumb knuckle, 2T flax seed
(Blend the crap out of your carrots if you drink as a smoothie, otherwise you'll be drinking shredded carrots.)

A bunch of Spinach, 2 stalks celery, a small Apple, a handful of blackberries, a handful of raspberries, 2T flaxseed

Blend these with ice as a smoothie, or strain pulp for juice

  • @michellexm thanks for the advice about the fiber! I'm not having any other those issues currently and sure don't want to start!

Definitely!  You might also just consider doing some type of smoothies in the blender instead of juicing as that way you'll be preserving the fiber (if you don't strain your smoothies).

If you just blend them together, you're still getting the fiber. We always just do smoothies. Sometimes I strain out some of the pulp for a smoother texture.

  • If you really want to go hardcore and retain all the fiber, get a Vitamix. I swear mine could liquefy about anything. You don't even need to cut stuff up before you throw it in (unless it's something you want to remove seeds from, like an apple).

This is the truth.  Vitamixes are incredible.  I don't own one, but I sure wish I did.
  • I second the vitamin. Its my favorite kitchen tool.

I've heard mixed things about having flax seeds while pregnant- mostly because it's side affect of mimicking the estrogen hormone but it sounds like opinions are mixed and research is spotting. Anyone else here this as well? Anyone had a doctor tell them not to have or to have flax seed??
  • I really enjoyed those little cutie oranges with 2 apples and 1-2 carrots. That's been my favorite. Also I don't recommend juicing anything with grapefruit...too overpowering and bitter
  • I love carrot, beet, apple juice :)

You can omit it while pregnant, or ask your doctor. I haven't juiced since being pregnant,it grossed me out.

  • I love juicing.  I think it's a wicked easy way to get in the fruits and veggies I may be lacking, plus it helps me go.... I use the NutriBullet, so no fiber goes away (which was a huge selling point for me).

  • @Bliss+Berry that sounds wonderful; I have a ninja blender as well. Maybe I'll start alternating between juicing and blending. Is superfood boost like a powder type mix in?
  • I don't juice, because I like to make sure I get the whole fruit/veggie.  I got a Ninja and I've been making smoothies with spinach, mango, pineapple and banana and coconut water.  I just got a superfood boost and I'm going to start adding that in.

    I love green smoothies!!!
@Bliss+Berry I have a Magic Bullet that I use to blend frozen fruit, greek yogurt and milk for my morning commute drink. I just got a Ninja so I will be using this for my vegetable/fruit smoothies.
I'll have to try your combo, it sounds yummy! How much of each ingredient do you use?
  • I love beet juice. I mix it with apples and some lemon. Beets help cleanse the kidneys (or so I've read). That's why your pee turns pink when you've had a lot :)
