STMs Anterior Placenta

Wondering if any STMs have or have had an anterior placenta?  I'm 22 weeks and I really can't feel the baby move. I'm wondering when you started to feel your baby and if it you felt him or her enough to do kick counts and keep track of fetal movement later on?  Thanks so much!

Re: STMs Anterior Placenta

  • Had one with my first and have one again this time.  I've felt movements for a while now although certainly more faint at first.  I don't really remember when I felt them with my first.  The intensity also depends on where exactly the placenta is, how baby is positioned (where kicks are aimed), and your build.

FWIW, I've never been asked to do actual kick counts - just to note baby's movement and to be aware if I felt less movement than was typical.

Also keep in mind that until you know what they feel like, you'll need to lay down and be still and focused to really feel them ;)

  • I'm a ftm, but at my a/s I was told I had an anterior placenta, and when I told the doctor it was strange since I'm feeling a lot of movement he got all upset and said that he never understood why people expect not to feel a lot of movement with the placenta in that position since there are nerves all over the uterus and you can still feel movement everywhere else (sides, top, bottom). I think it just depends on how sensitive those nerves are. IMHO it just depends on how receptive your nerves are and how active baby is (which seems to vary greatly amongst babies).

  • This is so funny, I was going to ask the same thing. My first I had a posterior and I hardly felt him at all. This one they told me I had an anterior but I don't believe it because I feel kicking all day long! And since about 16 weeks, it's not super strong but it's there and it can sometimes see my stomach move. Weird.
  • Mine is also anterior. I started feeling movement about 16 weeks and it has been daily ever since (now all the time).

Also try searching the boards for anterior placenta because there have been a bunch of discussions about this recently and those threads had a lot of responses/information. :)

Yes do this, but don't reply to threads that are more than a week old please. :)
    Good point!

  • My first was anterior, and I definitely feel this one way more often, much stronger, and I felt this one much earlier.  As for kick counts, once my first got big enough, I could definitely feel her move and kick counts were easy,  I know the waiting is hard but you'll get to the point where yours is big enough to feel every day!

  • I have one this time but haven't had it make a difference in the amount of movement I've felt. I also was never asked/expected to do kick counts
  • I'm almost 24weeks and have definitely felt baby but not consistently and not as "strong" as I remember ( but I'm hoping as baby gets bigger I will)

Maybe later on we will be the moms whose LOs kicks don't keep us up all night? :)

  • I'm 21 weeks with an anterior placenta and I just started feeling her maybe a week ago. I had the same with DD1 and I think I was feeling her a bit early. I've seen a few kicks externally, too, but it's been nothing to everything all in one week. I've never had to do kick counts but having an anterior placenta in the past, I don't think the placenta placement would be a problem later in the pregnancy, which from what I understand is when you may have to do that.

  • Thanks for all the info, ladies! It's good to hear how other women with anterior placentas are experiencing their pregnancies.

  • Mamas, when was your SO able to feel the baby kick?

  • I have an AP and I can feel movement every day but it isn't very distinctive yet, if that makes sense.

@katekat8721, my doctor said it would be a couple more weeks for me (I'm almost 24 weeks) before I could expect DH to feel LO consistently (with an AP). With twins I imagine it might be sooner for you!

  • flerlgirl - thanks girlie! I hope so!
lalala8 - well dang, I am hitting around there soon and so far, nuttin'.

I guess I can give hubby a rest then for another couple weeks. I'm currently having him run into the room whenever I feel them. Then they stop when he tries. Poor dude!

  • STM and I started feeling the baby move around 12 wks I think? I would lay in bed in the morning with a full bladder and could feel little flutters. I thought it was too early, but the flutters slowly increased in strength. I'm 21 wks now. I don't feel a lot of kicks to the front, mostly upwards or to my cervix, and a lot of pushing towards the front. Fiance' felt the baby kick last night for the first time. He was laying on my belly and baby boy kicked him in the side of the face! He seemed to either really like or really dislike his daddy's voice.

  • @katekat8721 dh has been able to feel this one since around 20-21 weeks on a regular basis and sporadically before that. I do have an anterior placenta this time but can feel lots of movement. Last time I felt the same amount of movement but I was able to feel it a few weeks earlier.

@katekat8721 With DD, it came out of nowhere. I went from feeling nothing to significant kicks overnight. It's coming. :)
Ditto! It was like I maaayyybeee felt soooomethiiiing and then one day there was no question. She likes to wait until 5 am because why not... so maybe yours are partying when you're sleeping.

  • I'm a FTM too. My dr was not concerned about me feeling her until 24 weeks. She said with her own 4 kids she has they were all so different. She said 1 would even scare her because if little movement and an anterior placenta. She said her boys were lazier and her girls were stronger. I started feeling them for sure at 19 weeks. But some days not at all. I started feeling them a lot more every week. But some nights I could tell she moved and it took much longer to feel her. They are pretty consistent now at 24+ weeks. If u are worried I would call.
  • I have anterior placenta also. I have only felt low movements or up by my rib cage. I'm hoping as she gets stronger I will start feeling them all over my belly.
  • I've had an anterior placenta for my last two pregnancies. I think I started feeling movement at like 22 or 23 weeks last time, maybe a little earlier, hard to remember for sure, but never had a problem, finding the heartbeat.

This time I felt them earlier, like 16 or 17 weeks but had a really hard time finding the heartbeat.

I haven't started kick counts or anything yet, because she's fairly regular with her movements.
