STM+- name issues and my own confession

We keep calling this baby by her big sisters name! They do look a lot alike and we are sleep deprived and all that but yeah, I finally understand how my mom and grandmothers all felt when they would go through a whole string of names before actually calling me by own! Last night was the worst... we were trying to feed her- I was nursing and DH was using a tube/syringe to supplement. We both called her "Sophie" instead of "Ella" at least 3 times before we finally both looked at each other like "oh sh!t... wrong kid."

Re: STM+- name issues and my own confession

  • Yup been there too! One night I was so tired I had to pause and think of the baby's name!

  • I think you're so use to saying that ONE name when the second kid arrives that it's bound to happen! My grandmother had 10 kids, I can imagine what the roll call sounded like as she just went down the list! I've called Baby Girl her big sister's name a few times already. They don't even look that much alike, I'm just use to calling DD1's name. My aunt confuses me and my DD1's name all the time because they are so similar. Growing up my two cousins' name just became one long name since they were always together lol they hated it!

  • I called Cordelia Ellie while the nurse was wheeling us out, it's happened multiple times since then lol

  • Hey, it happens...I've swapped their names, and they're not even the same sex. Nor do they look anything alike.
  • Don't feel bad, I've been doing this for a long time with DS and our dog! I'm sure it will only get worse when this LO arrives ;)

  • I still do it. My first two both start with M, so I'm always calling by the wrong name.
  • Yep... we do this too! Both names start with l.

  • I've called LO by the dog's name several times!
  • Yep doing it too, especially in the middle of the night. It doesn't help that both names start with R either ;)
  • I haven't done the name confusion but I get genders all messed up. I keep referring to DS as her or she. And the poor dog gets called every name in the book before we get it right.
  • After reading all the responses I now don't feel so bad about calling my little one by my cat's name. My DH was like, "really? The cat?" LoL!
  • We picked out a name early in the pregnancy, but a couple weeks ago we decided we didn't like it anymore. We only decided on a name when LO was a few days old. But in my head, all of a sudden I'm calling the baby the original name we picked. I guess names just get stuck in your head...

  • DD is 2 and I still often call her the (male and not remotely similar) dog's name and vice versa.  Usually when one of them is doing something bad.

  • As the oldest of 5, I've been called every name! To this day, I typically see my parents 1 or 2 weeks each year-and I still am called by other kids' names! (I'm 29-and not always around... You'd think it would be easy to keep separate!) I have caught myself referring to LO by her big sister's name... (Big sister was a 2nd tri loss-but we continued to refer to the nursery as big sis's room, so the name is in my head. Also, DD's name is very similar to big sister's-we did that to honor big sis)

I totally keep calling DS3 by DS2's name!

They've actually done some brain research on why we do this - it's because there's a little area of your brain dedicated to "Children" (or "Men I love" or "Small Beings Who Depend on Me") and when your thoughts zap to that little area, your brain sometimes sends the wrong name to your mouth!  I'll try to find the article about it - it was interesting!
