Sick Baby? Help?

Hey ladies, DD has vomited twice today and isn't acting her usual self. :( I fed her bananas around 11 ish and she breastfed like normal. Around 3:30 she vomited a lot. No crying or anything but I saw pieces of banana. We changed her and and seemed fine just a little subdued. I tried feeding her maybe 15-20 mins after that because it had been about 3 hours since she last breastfed and she fell asleep for about an hour in my arms. As soon as she woke up, she vomited all over me. :( again she's not crying or upset just sleepy and cuddly and not her usual self. I don't want her to get dehydrated, but don't want to keep force feeding her either. Any mommas have advice? My drs office is closed right now...

How long should I wait to try and feed her? At what point do I start worrying about her not getting enough fluids?

Thanks ladies. We are supposed to go on a date tonight but not sure I can leave our sicky baby. :(

Re: Sick Baby? Help?

  • I'm sure there are others with better advice, but when lo had the flu, they told us as long as she was drinking "something" even if she only took an ounce, and was having 6 wet diapers, that she should be fine.. they also said to watch out for signs of dehydration like her eyes looking sunken or the soft spot on the heard being more sunken in..
I was freaked out b/c she was only taking like 10oz of formula a day, but at least she was keeping it down and ended up fine. The nurse told me not to force feed, just keep offering the bottle and she will eat when hungry.

That said, do they have an after hours line you could call for peace of mind?

    Feel better little Ariana!

  • Usually so long as she's having wet diapers as normal, you shouldn't have to worry about dehydration too much. Just offer and see if she's interested in fluids and follow her cues with that. Ditto on the after hours number, just for your peace of mind. Hopefully she feels better soon!

I'm so sorry about your date...it really sucks to have a sick baby, especially when it means cancelling something you've planned and looked forward to.

  • Thanks for the advice. She's sleeping in daddy's arms right now. I called the office and they said they could page the dr but I feel like I should maybe wait a little and see how she does.

We have non refundable tickets to a show tonight so I'm definitely bummed about that. Gotta take care of our baby though! Hopefully it's just a little bug and won't last too long!
  • I'm sorry! Hope she is better soon!
  • Try some water in addition to nursing if you're getting worn out? That's not official advice, just a thought.
  • When our LO was vomiting, the pediatric nurse said to let her empty her stomach. Check her mouth to see if it still felt wet. If it did, let her be. If it was dry, give her 1 tsp of breast milk or pedialyte. See if she keeps it down. They said not to feed her a "normal" portion (or time) until she was keeping small amounts of food down.

So sorry that she's sick. :((

About your tickets - maybe you can sell them on StubHub?

  • Yep, try little amounts until she can she something down, but keep offering. Check wet diapers, mouth, tears and feel for a sunken soft spot. These will tell you if she's hydrated enough. Stomach bugs typically run their course in 24 hours......good luck momma, it's tough when they're sick.

You could also offer a sippy cup if you are using one yet....

  • Watch the diapers. I have been spending most of my time with sick DD topless in bed.

    DH is way jealous.

  • This was our LO a few weeks ago. The pedi said try pedialyte and only nurse for five minutes at a time, every hour. As long as she has 6 wet diapers is 24 hours she is fine.
So sorry she is sick :( and so sorry about your date night :(

  • Thanks ladies. She has kept the rest of her food down so far which is good but she's only had 5 wet diapers today. :( she went to bed super early and has been waking up on and off with little whines. My poor baby.
