Exersaucer- a waste or a necessity?

I am trying to not fill my house with excess baby items that will not be used. I can't decide whether I should register for an Exersaucer or not. For STMs, do you LO's like them? If so, any tips on how to pick a good one?

Re: Exersaucer- a waste or a necessity?

  • Depends on what else you get. We didn't have one but had a jumperoo. I liked having something to contain her in if I needed a few minutes to not worry what she might get in to.

  • My son used ours for almost ten months. For us it was worth it. But it was a gift! I registered for it.

  • We had both a jumperoo and exersaucer (one upstairs and one downstairs). For us it was a lifesaver for when we were getting ready in the morning for work or cooking dinnerat night. Kept baby confined and happy to get some stuff done quick. You probably only need one. I got my jumperoo off of craigs list. Even now I pull them out of the garage for friends who visit with babies around 5-12 months. It's nice for them to not constantly be after a rolling/crawling baby if needed.
  • It's not a waste but also not a necessity. It was convenient for a few months but they are big if space is an issue. I'm glad we had it but we could probably live without it.

  • DS definitely used it a lot, but then we also got the Baby Einstein Jumperoo and he loved that one way more.  The exersaucer was a PITA to put together, and to take apart for each stage.  It's also a bitch to clean the tray and toys, especially when they get doused in baby puke.

  • I vote waste... We had a hand-me-down one... but only used it probably a grand total of 2 hours.

  • Our first son loved his jumperoo. Not really something you NEED just one of those things that are nice to have.

  • We used ours all the time. If I wanted to cook dinner, grab a shower, go to the bathroom....I for worth it. We got one that allowed her to jump around....and we bought one that was from a resale shop so it was only 35 dollars.

Loved our jumperoo with both boys!  I kept it where they could see me, I could see them when I was  cooking or cleaning in the kitchen. So helpful to have. Would definitely agree with @kitchencolors and go with the jumperoo over the exersaucer.  Mine loved being able to bounce in it as well as play with the different toys.

If you plan on more kids it will definitely be worth it too. This will be the third kiddo to use ours and it has held up super well. (Fisher-Price)

  • We had this one and this one.  The rainforest jumperoo was a hand-me-down and the sassy jumper was a present from FIL.  DS1 loved both of them.  We called them his "ka-bounce bounce" and he would literally be happy in there for hours if we'd let him stay there.  I have videos of him from 5 months up until about 17 months.  He loved them so much, even after he became mobile.  Our OT suggested that we get rid of them.  They're not bad for most kids, but because he had very low muscle tone in his upper body, they were giving him an easy activity that didn't force him to work his core and arms.  So we passed them on.  If DS2's development is on track, I might get the Sassy seat again.  It's not expensive and it won't be difficult to move overseas (assuming our new house has door jambs).  I look back at the videos and pictures of DS1 in his and he got so much joy out of those toys; they're totally worth it from that point.

  • We have an exersaucer and jumparoo. Both were gifts. I liked both, but probably would've only gotten the jumparoo had they not been gifts.

We never had a exersaucer or jumparoo and didn't miss them. I was too worried about the potential hip issues, especially with a breech baby.

  • DD really liked the Fisher Price rainforest jumperoo. Not a necessity, but it was really nice to have.

  • Nice to have, not a necessity. We only used it for maybe 3 months before she wanted to be free.

  • Totally worth it. We would move from Jumperoo to Exersaucer to Tummy time....
  • We bought an Exersaucer and were given a Jumperoo. I preferred the Jumperoo. It was less noisy and a lot bouncier, so DS was able to use it longer.

  • It was a necessity for us, it was the ONLY place DS would let us put him down without crying until he was 9 months, but I agree, jumparoos are better.
  • Not à need, but it sure was handy for baby containment from about 5 months to around 14 months! Him being in there allowed me to do chores, bring in the groceries when I was home alone with him, etc. That thing also had an uncanny ability to get him to poop when he was backed up.

I kind of wish we had gotten à jumperoo as i think ds would have loved the bouncing (he used to jump in there), but out exersaucer for sure earned its keep.

  • It's hard for me to say it wasn't necessary, because I don't know how I would've ever gotten things done like cooking dinner for a good 6 month stretch. I'm sure you could get by without one, but if you have the room (they're pretty bulky), why not? I agree to go for a jumparoo over an exersaucer though.

I also thought I was going to be a cool modern parent & not have my house overflowing with obnoxious plastic crap, but I got over it real fast when we used one at a friend's house. If you're not having a big shower & would rather get other essentials, take it off your registry & check out Craiglist or consignment sales. You can easily snag one for cheap, since it does have a limited range of use.
  • Thanks for asking this!!! I've been debating one & now it seems like the jumparoo is the way to go :)
  • My daughter used hers for about 6 months...I often put her in it outside of the shower. I wanted her entertained and close by.
  • definitely not a necessity, but was nice for containment purposes (bathroom, quick shower, gardening, etc) we don't really have enough room for a pack n play to be out, so this was what i would use.
