BF trouble

my daughter is 5 days old. she latched on really well initially, then i had to go to bottle feeding her for a day because i had a blood transfusion due to complications with delivery. i bought a pump to keep her getting breast milk and to store it when i go to work. when shes crying to be fed she wont latch on at all, which makes us have to use a bottle. now if i try to get her to latch, she wont even when shes not upset and giving her early cues. any advice/tips is greatly appreciated

Re: BF trouble

  • Patience. That's all I can really tell you. Try lots of skin-to-skin and just breathe. Try and stay relaxed -- babies pick up a lot on frustration and it keys them up, too. I had latch issues with my first, and it was so frustrating, but we did eventually work it out.

I highly recommend that you see a lactation consultant to help you come up with a plan -- they can give you lots of good ideas for getting her to latch and help you make it work. You might also try posting this over on the Breastfeeding board.

  • I had similar problems with my LO.  He latched great at the hospital, then got home and had issues.  Our pediatrician was amazing and got us in to a lactation consultant who helped.  We ended up using a breast shield b/c of engorgement/flat nipple issues and after 3 weeks we are totally off them and he eats like a champ.  Patience and relaxation are key (which is hard to do when you are sleep deprived and all you want to do is feed your kid).  If you have to pump and feed through a bottle, then you do what you have to do.  Good luck, it does get easier!
  • Try a nipple shield. I used that to transition my LO from bottle back to breast and now he can do both (we need to supplement with formula due to supply issues). It's similar to a bottle nipple so it may help her if you start off nursing with it and then try to remove it and re-latch her.
  • Yes, Be patient and try to stay relaxed. We bottlefed almost every feeding for the first two weeks then all of the sudden nursing got a lot easier. Just keep practicing. Offer the breast first, but when you see her (or you) starting to get frustrated, give her the bottle. And i'm sure you've heard this from everyone, but the first few weeks are definitely the hardest. Things will get so much easier soon. Good luck!
