acetaminophen AND ibuprofen?

DD is one sick little peanut! I have been giving her Tylenol around the clock every 6 hrs, and it is the only thing that seems to help. No real fever but I have been medicating her for pain. She is cutting teeth on top of this chest cold. We have a pedi appt today just to make sure she doesn't have an ear infection or strep throat.

My question is, can I give her Advil too? After 4 or 5 hours she screams and cries, and then it is sooo hard to give her the Tylenol. I was thinking of giving her Advil 3 hours after the Tylenol. She's eating o.k. and is 14lbs 4 oz.

This sick baby shit is for the birds. All the babies should be healthy all the time.

Eta: Advil and Tylenol together. Jeez, can you tell I haven't slept?!?!

Re: acetaminophen AND ibuprofen?

  • Acetaminophen is Tylenol. Advil is ibuprofen. As far as I know, alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen is ok, but not Tylenol and acetaminophen, as those are the same thing. I'd call the pedi to make sure. I hope she feels better!

  • Just call me Special Snowflake today :p. I meant alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

I will talk to the pediatrician later too. Just feeling a little desperate right now :(

  • @NKaeding we haven't tried ibuprofen before. She only turned six months a couple weeks ago. I know I prefer it over Tylenol for my own aches and pains.

  • I rarely use Tylenol after my LOs are 6 months. Ibuprofen works better and lasts longer.

  • Yes, you can alternate Tylenol and ibuprofen. If you're tempted to choose one over the other, though, ibuprofen tends to manage pain more effectively.

  • I find Advil way more effective.  In Canada, you can use it 4mo and up without consulting a physician, so we've been using it for a while for teething (although Amanda's such a sensitive girl, only the teething gel really gives her any relief).

I really recommend it, but it's always good to consult a professional.  ;)

This.  In extreme cases where they are in a lot of pain or have high fever I do alternate.  But after 6 months my go-to is ibuprofen.

  • Thanks ladies! Pedi diagnosed an ear infection. The Advil is helping sooo much. She smiled even! Amoxicillin prescribed as well. Now to avoid the inevitable antibiotic diarrhea...

    Thanks again!

Our doc said you can alternate Tylenol and Motrin, one every three hours. For us, Motrin is way more effective.
    Ditto
