Confusing first ultrasound

i just got back from my first appointment and am so confused. According to my lmp I should be about 7 weeks. However, I wasn't charting and have never paid attention to ovulation, so I don't know. The ultrasound was measuring behind but they didn't say how much. They did say the sac was split which could mean twins were developing or just one baby and one is a clot. I don't even know what that would mean if one side is a clot? They took blood to test my hcg and progesterone levels and will call Monday with results. I don't even know what to think about all this. Does anyone have any insights or experience with any of that? I've tried not to get overly attached yet in case something was wrong, but I do want things to work out.

Re: Confusing first ultrasound

  • Did you ask them to clarify at your appointment? Don't be afraid to asks questions. Good luck. I hope everything is healthy and levels are high!, :)

  • No experience but my fingers are crossed for good news.
  • Did you get to have an appointment with your doctor after the u/s? Yes, as pp mentioned, please ask questions! I have no insights but I hope everything works out!

  • FX everything works out! No idea about the clot, but definitely ask your doctor.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • I did but all they said was since I had no idea when I ovulated and without blood work they don't have any way to piece it all together. I probably could have asked more questions, you know hindsight. But I was a little shocked by the twins/not viable prospect. Both of which were shocking lol
  • My fingers are crossed for you.

  • Can you manage to do tolher US like in a ER just to check and have more information? Crossing fingers for all of you, guys!

. I don't think I can go to the ER unless I had a good reason. I don't have cramps or any bleeding so I have no reason to go to the ER. I did just take another clear blue weeks test to see what it would say. The first ones I took said 2-3 weeks and this one came out as 3+ despite taking it at 6 at night with probably diluted urine. I know they aren't always accurate, but at least it went up and didn't stay the same or go down. Before when it came out 2-3 that seemed on track to me, but I guess i could have ovulated late and be carrying twins and it just showed up early. Sigh...I don't even know!
  • From the sounds of it, your doctor wasn't terribly worried. So I'd just stick with that for now. Monday is just around the corner so st least you'll have results soon!
  • To get a US and have the chance to ask if she is anxious to know what is going on. Here is quite normal to do that. Not a big deal.

I didn't get the feeling like it was ominous news, more like everyone including the doctor was confused by the u/s picture, my lmp, etc. Monday is close but seems like forever! I'm going to just be glad I have no bad signs and that my test at home tonight came out okay. Of course, I'll still worry some. I just can't even find a similar situation anywhere on google to compare!
  • Good luck!

  • I ask a ton of questions during ultrasounds. They can be confusing. Definitely ask away on Monday when they call you. I'm surprised they couldn't give you more accurate info just using your LMP date.

no problem. I read somewhere on here you were from Brazil. I was just saying I don't think I can do that here in the US. They said unless I have some severe symptoms, then I could go.
  • The emergency room is for emergencies the people who work there have better things to do then give you an u/s that is a waste of there time. FX for good news for you Monday!! I alway think of a million things I wish I would have asked after I leave my appointments. The good news is no one seemed super concerned at your appointment. I would stay away from Dr. Google about the clot until you hear from your Dr Monday. Lots of T & P your way!

  • My SIL had this. She started bleeding and when she went in was told she had a split sac. The clot is called a vanishing twin and from what she was told, poses no threat to the other baby. She had a healthy pregnancy and delivered a healthy boy in spite of losing the other sac. FX for you! Hopefully this gives you some peace of mind.

  • With my first, my due date from lmp was 2weeks earlier than what they told me at my first u/s. I was 7 weeks and they said he was measuring closer to 5 weeks. Ended up going into labor on the original due date :) It is still early. No experience with the clot part of the question tho. Hope it is all good news Monday!

    I agree.

I know its not easy, but try to just relax. I pray a lot when I feel anxious and it is the only thing that helps me...I'm not sure if you are religious but sometimes I find its easier to leave in Gods hands.

This could still be a good thing too if its twins...stay positive.

    Thinking of you. T &P.

  • I have no experience or advice, but I wanted to say good luck and try not to stress anything before you see the doctor again on Monday.  I know it's much easier said than done, but try.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this, I'm sure it must be nerve wracking. With DD I measured behind, but my doctor scared the shit out of me by telling me she thought there was a good chance the pregnancy wasn't viable. In the end, I was just a week behind and everything turned out fine. Fx for you!

  • I had the same thing show up on my US almost a week ago... 2 sacs. My OB said the larger one is definitely a baby! The smaller one could be a twin, a small hemorrhage from the embryo implanting into the uterine wall, or it could be a vanishing twin. Either way, she should be able to tell from the heart beat or lack there of when I go back in a week. As far as measurements go, I guess we're in the same boat on that one too. LMP said EDD is 10/6, but my ovulation is always a week later than "normal" people, so the baby only measured at 5 weeks, instead of 6. Staying distracted has helped me not to dwell on it. Also joking with my ILs about the possibility of twins... It puts a very disgruntled look on DH's face, and we all get a good laugh! My thoughts and prayers are with you!

  • If you are indeed caring twins then seeing two sacs can be a good thing. Fraternal twins always have 2 sacs. ID twins happen in 4 categories depending on when the split happens.

    1. Di/Di - 2 sacs, 2 placentas (most safe)
    2. Mo/Di - 2 sacs, 1 placenta (most common, 2nd most safe--although plenty can go wrong)
    3. Mo/Mo - 1 sac, 1 placenta (less common, 3rd most safe)
    4. Conjoined - 1 sac, 1 placenta, partially connected babies (least common, most risky)

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for this. Sounds like exactly the same problem as me. My ultrasound looked like yours too although they didn't give us any pictures. After talking with my husband we decided the u/s tech was not as knowledgeable as she could have been. The Dr even commented that she didn't write much on my chart as to what she saw or didn't see. So... that probably is adding to the confusion. Your post was more informative than the tech. She said one sac looked like it had the yolk but the other more empty. I am just hoping for at least one healthy baby in 9 months but I will welcome two as well. Hopefully the blood work comes back fine and they will schedule another u/s to show more. I hope both of us end up with good news!

For everyone worried I'm going to go to the ER... I'm not so don't worry. Unless I had a real emergency I have never entertained the idea of going there.
