3rd Trimester

Breech Baby - Induction after version or C-Section?

I'm 38 w today with my 1st pregnancy and just found out baby is in a weird position - not completely breech, not completely transverse. My belly is like a triangle. He got himself into this position about 5 days ago and hasn't moved since. I thought he was still head down, and just his butt and feet were sticking out, so wasn't too concerned, but his head is actually up. I saw a nurse today and we scheduled a version with a doctor for tomorrow morning. Because he's not totally breech, it sounds like it has a good chance of working. But the nurse said the doctor will likely want to induce me so that he doesn't flip again. I would prefer not to induce (and for other reasons, I'd really like to get as close to 40 weeks as possible with this baby). I guess I see myself with a couple options:
1. The version works, I get induced. Which is 2 weeks earlier than I'd like, has a decent risk of needing a C-section anyway.
2. The version works, I refuse to get induced and wait for labor to start naturally. He might flip again, in which case I'd need a C section anyway. Or he might stay down, and I can deliver naturally.
3. The version doesn't work, and I schedule a C-section closer to 40 weeks.

I've tried some methods tonight to get him to turn naturally, but no luck so far.
I'm sure I'll get more clarity from the doctor tomorrow, but I feel like no matter what I'm choosing the "least worst" option.
Anyone else go through this?

Re: Breech Baby - Induction after version or C-Section?

  • I'd do the version and wait.  Check out spinningbabies.com too - lots of great advice on getting a baby into a good position.  Going to a chiro who knows the webster techinique is also good.
  • Loading the player...
  • My child birth coach suggests the ball technique. You sit on one of those large gym balls and rotate your hips like you are hula hooping. The goal is to force the baby down.
  • I did a version with DD at 36w4d.  Awful idea!  I was wanting a c-section anyway (everyone in family does them b/c all babies are breach).  The version was unsuccessful and, I believe, caused DD to be here 50 hours later.  2 epidurals in 48 hours was the worst part of it.  C-section was fabulous, never took any pain meds, and was running around ASAP.  Actually did a short jog to get gelato 3 days afterwards and bring it back to the hospital.  Skip the version...
Thankful with these 3 I'm guaranteed a c right off the bat!

ER 6.26.13 27 mature eggs, slight overstim. ET   7.1.13 ectopic, FET 2.1  9.10.14   TRIPLETS!!

  • I would really want to avoid a c-section so would try Webster, which is also less painful than a version. Second choice would be a version and then wait. I would only consider an induction under any circumstance if I had a favorable Bishop score.

  • I did a version at 37 weeks and one day, with no induction. The version worked and baby is still head down. So far so good. This is my second child and I delivered my first with no problems. I was monitored in the hospital for two hours after the version to make sure there were no complications. Looking into the research I liked my chances for it to work with little complications, but there are always complications. Good luck and I hope it all goes well.
  • P.S: My version was not super painful and very easy. I will tell you, the sooner you get it done the better as space fills up quickly. Also it has higher success rate if you have had a child.
