S/o kids drinking soda

When do you think it's o.k. for kids to have cookies (not baby num nums, but real cookies)? I made some heart-shaped shortbread cookies last night and while I think DS is too young to have one, I did think to myself that I bet he'd like it. Which got me thinking, when did/would you give your kid a cookie, say as dessert after lunch or something?

  • My son had his first cookie around Christmas.  He was 16 mos I think.  And the little shit started saying "cookie" as one of his first words.    I actually had to hide the homemade cutout cookies because he'd throw a tantrum if he saw them and I didn't give him one.

  • Uhm, whenever they're physically capable of having a cookie. I don't see what the big deal is for a kid to have a cookie a few times a year at holidays.  I gave my 6 mo old tastes of pumpkin pie at thanksgiving.

  • We don't have them in the house a lot. So when we do z will have bites & pieces of mine. No biggie.
  • Hmm..o.k. We're still working on trying to get DS to eat more solids, so I guess I'm mostly worried about anything that might deter him from eating more real food (and not just cookies). Maybe I'll wait until he's eating a bit more food, and then give a cookie here and there for dessert.

  • DS was probably around 15 months when he got his first cookie, it was Christmas time so they were all around. I don't keep sweets in the house like that so it is rare and when we do have them they are homemade so I am not worried about what is in them as much.

  • My oldest was at least a year. My younger two had them basically as soon as they could eat table food (which was early since I don't do purees). Not a ton, not often, but if everyone else is having one I'll give them a small cookie or a piece of mine.

Actually, an M&M is the only reason I got my son to smile for Christmas card photos this year.

  • DS probably didn't have any until he was about 2.  DD is 13 months and just had a few pieces of one last week when I was eating one. I wouldn't make a point of giving them to her but at this point if they're being eaten when she's around, which is rare anyway, I don't mind breaking off a few small pieces.

  • DS was 16 months and I remember exactly because we were at a party and a family member asked if she could give him a little cookie. I said sure and turn around to find him with this gigantic frosted sugar cookie.

  • I give dd a piece of my chocolate chip cookie when I have one. She is 12 months. If I.don't share then I can't eat it in peace and sometimes I want some chocolate.

  • A mom from moms group offered one to DS2 (6 months) the other day. I said no because he is pretty terrible with solids and would have just made a huge mess and gagged a million times. I don't think it would be sacrilege to give him one to nibble now and then if he could handle it, but at a party or something, sure.

  • We have a soda a stream so once in a while they will get lemonade or cranberry bubbled.
  • I gave Owen tastes of sweet baked goods awhile after starting solids and one of his early foods was graham crackers anyway which I'd consider cookie-like anyway. He's had his own whole cookies recently (15mos) but it's not an everyday thing.
  • C got cookies when she was old enough to handle them, mostly animal crackers type ones. She probably has more than she should, but she will still choose fruit over sweets any day of the week, so I don't feel too bad about it and I try to make sure if she does have a cookie or other sweet, that I even it out with a really healthy snack.
