Is this an ER visit?

I'm getting LO ready for bed and my 2 year old is hanging out in the room. I suddenly need to shit my pants so I put the baby in her crib. 2 year old is playing w toys on the floor. I do my business and hear them laughing together. As I'm coming back I hear her cry and I immediately see that the toddler has somehow climbed into her crib (!!!!!!! That's new) and is STANDING ON HER CHEST. I grab him off, she stops crying, I pick her up and she seems ok but I'm freaked out. If he had broken something or punctured a lung or something horrible it would be obvious right??? Or does she need an X-ray immediately? My stupid colon has horrible timing!!!!!!

  • Oh Nooo!!! I'm not sure, but I'm terribly sorry that happened! Maybe one of our nurses can weigh in? Hugs, MN!

  • Wow scary. I'd say if she's acting fine and breathing ok no trip necessary. Although in my head heart I know if it were me... I'd feel better if we went.

  • Ahhh. I have no idea what I would do. Poke her? Listen to her breathing? I would probably call. That would scare the shit out of me. Well, I guess in that situation, I would have just gone, so it would just scare me. Update please!!

  • There ribs are so much cartilage right now it takes ALOT to break them and i done think that they could puncture a lung even if it was broken. With that said though a punctured lung is the biggest concern w broken ribs so watch her breathing if it starts to look like she is having a hard time breathing at all call 911! Also broken ribs hurt extremely bad to breathe so I'm pretty sure u would know. Sorry this happened and good luck

I think if she is acting okay, not crying and/or appearing to be having difficulty breathing I would monitor her. She's probably fine. Broken ribs or collar bones are pretty painful so I would think she would be showing signs that she is hurting. A punctured lung is also uncomfortable and usually noticeable. I imagine it was a scary thing to see! If be hesitant to take her in and have X-rays and exams done/expose her to ER germs unless she seemed hurt. If anything changes you can always take her or call 911.

If it makes you feel better, DH fell full weight on top of LO a few months ago and took her in because he was concerned about broken bones/internal injuries. She was 100% fine!

This....if she becomes lethargic or inconsolable, I would do the ER or 911.....a break or crush injury would be apparent, she would be very uncomfortable....if still concerned in the morning you could call the pedi....for tonight, I would just monitor.....

I shouldn't laugh but I am because the SAME friggin thing happened to me but poor DS2 was only 3 months :( What is lame is that DH was laying on the ground close to the baby and had turned to look at a text that had come in and my two year old at the time was singing and swinging around a stuffed animal. I go to the kitchen to grab a glass of water and came back to see my oldest STANDING on the baby. Holy f*ck. I scream GET OFF!!!! In this posessed voice which freaked everyone out but it worked immediately. The baby cried right away because he could breath again but a few minutes later he was smiling and everything. I don't think my oldest even knew what he was doing. He probably thought the baby was a pillow, there was no ill intent at all. We called the nurse hotline since it was 7pm at the time and she said if the baby seems fine it's probably a good indication that nothing was broken or damaged. It scared me so much and that image is burned in my brain. I blame DH who was NOT paying attention LOL

  • @MagickalNarwhal,  How is everything?  I've been away from the computer for a few days (ILs - joy), and I know you already got great advice.  I just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you all.  If your toddler wasn't jumping on her I'm sure she's fine, especially if she's acting normal.  Children's ribs are pretty hard to break!  Definitely scary though!!

  • I'm sorry that happened. Had similar experience. What the pp suggested is what I would have said. Hoping LO is just fine. Big hugs.

  • She likely fine. All the vital organs in the chest cavity r protected by the sternum and rib cage. If those were broken LO would be crying in pain.
