I wasn't sure where to post this story, but I'm hoping it reaches those that are searching the internet for positive stories about pregnancy after multiple miscarriages or successful pregnancies after bleeding. So, here's my story.
In September 2010, I found out I was pregnant for the first time with my son. I had a little bit of implantion spotting right around the time my period was due, but that was it. I went in for my first U/S at about 6 weeks, and all they saw was an empty sac. Two weeks later, I did a second U/S, and we saw the fetus and heartbeat. Turns out my dates were a little off, and I have a retroverted uterus, so we couldn't see the little munchkin the first time. Very happy ending, and he now 2.5 years old!
In January 2013, we decided to TTC again and got pregnant right away. This time, I had more implantation bleeding than the first time (light flow for a couple of days), but I wasn't too worried. Decided to wait until 8 weeks for the U/S, though, because I didn't want to go through the two weeks of waiting and worrying that I did with the first pregnancy. However, at the first U/S, I found out that I had a blighted ovum. I had had no spotting or bleeding aside from the implantation bleeding, my beta levels were great, and my cervix was closed. There was just nothing developing. I started spotting a few days later (around 8 weeks and 5 days) and elected to do an U/S 3 weeks later when there was still no development. I have tremendous faith that everything happens for a reason, and the recovery from the D&C was uneventful, so I remained in good spirits.
Fast forward 3 months, and we decided to try again. Got pregnant again the first month! This time, same implantation bleeding as the last time, so I was worried. Were we in store for another miscarriage? I decided to schedule my first prenatal appointment at 7 weeks. Once again, we discovered an empty sac that measured closer to 5 weeks, and my beta levels were dropping. Could this really be bad luck again?! I elected to have another D&C, and I was fortunate that the recovery time was minimal again with no issues. I also did a follow-up U/S and bloodwork to rule out some possible causes of the recurrent miscarriages, and all of the tests came back normal. However, we did not proceed with chromosomal testing.
Decided to try again after 3 months, and once again, got pregnant the first month (3 pregnancies in 1 year!). I found out I was pregnant on November 30. Prior to that, I had some spotting about a week before my period was due (which seemed early for implantion bleeding), and then again, on the day of my expected period, I bled lightly for 1/2 a day and stopped. Sure enough, I was pregnant. I was crushed as this was exactly what happened the other two times. I prepared myself mentally for another miscarriage but physically felt pregnant (very minor symptoms though, same as with my son). Between weeks 4 and 7, I had no further issues. However, at 7 weeks, I started spotting pink - not good. This went on for 2 weeks, turning from pink to red to brown. Usually there was only a little when I wiped, but one afternoon, I bled enough to fill a pad. I was out of town when this was going on, so I decided not to go to the doctor. I knew there wasn't anything they could do. I scheduled my first prenatal appointment for 9 weeks and 3 days. I prayed and prayed that everything would be okay, but I mentally prepared myself for bad news again.
I couldn't believe my eyes when the U/S Tech showed us a small fetus, measuring 9 weeks, on the screen! She also noticed a small area under the gestational sac, a subchorionic hemorrhage, that was causing my light bleeding and on-going spotting. This may have been caused by a second sac of an embryo that did not develop. Regardless, I had one healthy, growing baby and was so relieved! I will still be on pins and needles until my 12 week U/S, but I feel so much relief, and a little bit of disbelief, at this point.
So, I'm hoping this story gives people hope if they need it. Sometimes what looks like an empty sac on an early U/S DOES turn out okay. Implantation bleeding can be more than just spotting, and on-going spotting/bleeding does not necessary mean a miscarriage.
Re: Positive Outcome After 1st Trimester Bleeding and Spotting
The bleed grew as the weeks went on but the baby grew too. I won't get in to the whole story now but the pregnancy was successful and my baby just turned 7 months old. Best wishes to everyone.
At 8w I had a huge bleed. We're talking, like, the heaviest day of your period. There was tissue/clots too. I had two ultrasounds in the week that followed, and the little heart is still going at around 170. No red bleeding since, but some very light brown spotting when I wipe. I'm totally used to seeing that now!
I have been trying to find some experiences of others with bleeding/spotting in the first trimester. I am at 5 1/2 weeks and have been spotting, mostly brownish, for a week now (it started when I expected my period.) A couple of times (after a BM especially) there has been a little more blood and it is redder, but then goes back to just a little brown when I wipe. I haven't read about anyone spotting for so long- everyone just says 1 or 2 days max. Has anyone heard about anyone spotting for more than a week?
When I made my OB appointment they said not to worry. My first appt is in 3 weeks, not sure I can handle not knowing till then!
