Photographer at the hospital?

Is anybody doing this? I really hadn't considered it but several people have told me if they had to do over they would have...the grandparents and husbands can relax and enjoy themselves instead of trying to capture moments....what do you think? I would love some amazing pics of this day....but worth it?

On the one hand, I'm generally weirded out by the trend of having a professional cover all these events that used to be snapshots taken by family/friends. But if a professional photographer meant that I would never have to despair over what I looked like after giving birth............

That is a great idea for the hospital to have a photog on staff! Wow! I probably won't either but people are acting like it was crazy I hadn't thought of it!

We're actually not even going to let every person that comes take a shit ton of pictures, in part because we don't want people putting them all over FB. We want sole discretion of what pictures of LO are shared publicly. We haven't discussed any professional photos after we are home.

I would not do it; NMS. However, a friend who did it absolutely adores her photos and would do it again if the opportunity presented itself.

I've thought about it but I don't think we're going to do it. It'd be cool to have some good shots but I don't know how I feel about having another person I don't know well in the room during L&D. Maybe for #2..

I think this depends on how you feel about photos in general. You know? There are people that never ever have family photos done and then people that have family photos taken every single year. So your outlook on photos and if you have the extra funds plays a part in the choice. I LOVE seeing other people's professional labor/birth photos. I think they are beautiful. However I'm not getting them done. I have a nice camera and have hired a doula that doesn't mind snapping a few photos. That's fine by me.

We had newborn pics done with DD and really don't feel like doing it again. BUT in an effort to not start this baby off with second child syndrome, we will probably use the hospital photog to get a few pro pics.

Do you mean during labor or for newborn photos? My hospital has Photographers on staff that come by to take newborn shots. They dont charge you anything to take the photos, you only pay if you decide to buy them. We did it with DD and will again with this one.

I love the idea of a photographer coming to the hospital. I am a picture person and DH will definitely be taking them during labor and delivery and I also want videos. Not any videos that are too inappropriate and if that region.
I'm not sure about having a photographer in there during the pain and I don't think I need any extra people looking at my lower region and the baby coming out. Part of me would love those moments being captured and my husband in the photos, but it isn't very private either.

I wouldn't have considered it really 'my thing' but after seeing a birth slide show while I was pregnant I really decided I wanted it even if I never shared it with anyone else. Well, best decision. I love them and this video makes me tear up every time, still.

I know there's a big difference between a home and hospital birth but here is a photographer that I follow on FB that does plenty of both and I think they're incredible no matter if they're at home, at the hospital, vaginal, or c section. https://pinkletoesblogstalker.com/blog/birth/

nope, I wouldn't do it. But my H is a photog and I feel like he got the shots I would want from the hospital. I just felt so gross after laboring and laboring and pushing...eh. But after the baby is home? Hell yes...bring on some newb photos

My doula is an amateur photographer as well so she has taken pictures during labor and delivery of my first two births. I can honestly say it wasn't something I thought I would ever want but looking back it is pretty cool to have those moments right after baby is born captured. She was able to capture such raw emotion and joy between my husband and I. I will say these pics are private just for husband and I as there is some blood and body parts:).

My hospital apparently comes around to everyone and asks if you want it, and then you decide if you want any of the prints. From what others have said there, they only take 10-15 mins to take the pics and come out really well, so I could see myself maybe picking one or two good ones.

Nah. We have enough snap-happy family members that I'm sure we'll have no shortage of pictures. I don't feel like every moment in the hospital needs to be documented. Only immediate family really cares to see those types of pictures anyway, so it doesn't make sense to pay for them.

ETA: Having a pro there wouldn't stop most grandparents and family members from taking tons of their own pictures anyway. It would just be redundant.

We did it. I didn't really think I would want it but a friend was building her portfolio for birth photography. I warned her since we were wanting a natural unmedicated birth I may kick her out. I completely forgot she was in the room (super small room!) & I'm so glad I had her there. I'm going to he so upset if we move before this baby comes b/c I want those pictures again sooooo bad.

A friend of mine is a photographer and I plan on having her do a session at the hospital, but she won't come until baby is a day old. She is a friend though and has been doing pictures for us for years. I don't think I would hire someone I didn't have a prior relationship with. I am also not doing birth photography. I'm good with those moments not being captured on film.

+1 to this! I definitely plan on utilizing the photographer that the hospital provides, since the session is free. Since I am a photo addict, I'll likely end up buying all the photos as well, but no harm in getting the free session done to see if you like the photos if that's what your hospital offers!
