What is MaterniT21 or similar like to get?

I assumed it was just a blood draw from your arm, not unlike the millions of other you get when pregnant.  I just had my nurse's appt, where you meet with a nurse who says things like "don't drink."  She also tells you about prenatal testing options. The options offered were the quad scan, NT, etc.  I asked about M21 or similar because I am 35, and she said the high risk doctor needed to approve, but that all genetic tests were invasive and carried risk to the baby.  I would never choose an amnio or CVS unless I had reason to suspect a problem, but I thought the whole deal with the genetic tests was that they were early and non-invasive.  No?

  • As far as I am aware, the tests that we were offered were at the 16 week appointment and were done via an amnio. I agree with you. I wouldn't get one unless I were at risk for something specific. Even then, I'm not sure I would. No sense worrying for an extra 5 months. I will deal with it when and if I have to when the time comes.

  • I was also under the impression that MaterniT21 is just a blood draw and does not carry the same risks as an amnio, but I could be wrong.
  • My dr touched on it at my first appointment yesterday.  She talked about Materni21.  Basically she said it was a blood test they can do between weeks 10 and 13 I believe.  It basically separates everything out of the moms blood, Plasma, Chromosomes etc.  Its supposed to be able to 99% accurately predict chromosomal defects such as Down Syndrome.

She mentioned it to me because im 34 and not high risk but on the older side for a first time mom.

We are going to look into it a bit more and weigh whether or not we'd want to know.  DH wants to know, I sort of dont.

  • I believe it's very similar to the Harmony test.  If that's the case, it's just a blood test.  I had it done last year with DD.  It usually takes a full 10 business days for the results, and many times they need to retest b/c they don't have enough DNA in the blood sample.

I'm having mine done in two weeks.  I was in a full blown panic last year, and I'm sure this time won't be any different.  And to add anxiety, the phlebotomist at my doc's office is an idiot and lost my sample last time so I had to go back and test.  How comforting!

    Good luck, mama.
  • I'm sure my nurse just didn't know what she was talking about then.  I hope that my high risk doctor will recommend it and it will work out.  It seems like the best of all options.  And I like our lab person.  She always remembers me and is nice to me, and in my book, that counts for a lot.
  • Materniti21 is just a blood draw. This is why the test is so valuable. I'm not sure if it is covered for everyone. From what my high risk doctor told me, it is covered by insurance when you are "advanced medical age." Otherwise you are paying a percentage.
