What is your 2year old learning?

What does your two year old know how to do? Count to 10? Say abc's? Pick out alphabet letters correctly? Pick out all the colors in the rainbow? Please and thank yous? Any of these? None of these? Anything else besides this? All kids develop differently. Just curious as to what other two year olds are doing. If you have something really neat that your child has learned let us know :)

Re: What is your 2year old learning?

  • Lily can count to 10 by rote and actually has one-to-one recognition when she's really focused, knows all her colours, can say the alphabet (often skips some), knows all the letters in uppercase and lowercase (with some confusion over things like dbp, of course), and the sounds they make.  She picked the last one up on her own from watching Word World and Leapfrog shows.  If we slowly sound out a word, she'll use her magnet/puzzle letters to spell it.  She's got a great memory, makes good connections and loves learning new things. I think I'm going to put up my calendar poster from teaching and start working on things like days of the week.

  • *He can count - to 12 really well, then he just starts throwing out numbers randomly (16 19 13.....), he's also able to count "things" so he can tell you he has 3 markers in his hands.  I'm not positive he can recognize written numbers though.
*He knows his abcs, and recognizes a few letters independently
*He knows all the colors.  We're working on blending - he knows red and blue make purple, but that's about it.
    *He knows his shapes
*He knows lots of animals and the sounds they make.  (Especially if they roar)
*He says please, thank you, and most recently no thank you (Thank you preschool!  I'm sure this didn't come from us at home)
    *He can draw circles
*He sings like a madman - I'm amazed at how many songs he knows and we get nightly concerts.  I'm thankful we've moved on from the death metal version of "Jingle Bells" and on to "Dinosaur, knocking on my door."  He often sings the Shabbat blessing over the candles over and over again.
    *He asks "why" ALL.THE.TIME.
    * He has figured out how to unlock ALL the locks on our front door. Even the one that is too high for him so he has to move his stool to the door, climb up, unlock it, climb down, and then move his stool away.
    * He has discovered the art of negotiation "just one" and stalling "what you doing mommy? (when he's supposed to be getting ready for bed)"
    * He has some time awareness, in that he talks about how his birthday is "next year" and we don't have a Christmas  tree anymore, but we'll have one again next year.

None of the above. He knows some animal sounds and he can do a mean puzzle on some of my iPhone apps. Like Blue's DS he loves using his stool to reach things. His teacher says he's going to be an engineer because he loves to dissect things and figure out how they work. As of late, his vocabulary has blossomed, but a lot of what he says is still gibberish.

It sounds like he's really analytical - with the puzzles and problem solving (stools/dissection).  I'd put money on the fact he can do a lot more than he "shows" because he's less interested in things that don't challenge him as much.  A lot of speech/recognition is just repetition, which can be boring.  It's much more fun to build with blocks than to count them.

  • *She counts to 15
*she knows her ABC's (upper and lower case, with a few common errors). She sings the alphabet, and identifies letters out of order
    *all of her shapes
    *several animals and sounds
    *she knows her colors
*many of the days of the week and a few of the months (Daycare has been working on this)
*Her favorite question is, "What's that?"

  • Missy, he'd be glad to. Maybe he even drops it off.

  • When you ask DS what his name is you have a 50/50 chance of him saying "Turbo". So yeah....
  • If you ask Levi his name you have a 50/50 chance of him saying ELMO Or MONKEY!

He has count to 3, everything is Blue or Green to him, he can sing a mean wheels on the bus and by that I mean he repeats up and down .

  • When you ask Alastair for his name, he gets confused if you mean his pseudonym or his real name.
