Best OS for a slim baby?

Hi all,

My little boy is about 3 months old and is just now growing out of his NB prefolds. He is a long and skinny baby (still just under 11 lbs.) ... any experience with good options for a slim LO? We really like the prefold/cover system we've been using since he was born but don't like the idea of continually having to buy new sizes of prefolds and would like to have some OS options in our stash... leaning towards pocket style but would welcome any input!

  • I should add that he is also a heavy wetter!

  • SoftBums Omnis in aplix are a good pocket choice that you can customize to the size of your LO. Rumparooz would probably be a little bulky right now at 11 pounds, but they might work well in another month or two. Grovias are also a good choice. They have a really trim AIO option or an AI2 that is really nice too

I also like Best Bottoms for skinny minnies, but those do have sized snap -in inserts that you'd have to replace as LO grows.

  • I agree with @clldll about best bottoms for skinny babes. They are sized inserts, but we just did small and large, skipped medium.

  • My recommendation is always flats, especially if you like prefolds. You won't need to replace them often like prefolds, but learning new folds is a little more challenging (only at first).

  • I live in Madison, WI which is where Nicki's retail store is located so the BB system is popular around here, although I've heard that BB are not great at containing poop. Anyone else have that experience?

  • Honestly, if you like prefolds I would stick to them. You can often get away with only using two or three sizes, but even if you get 4 or 5 you could still save money compared to some AIOs or pockets.

  • @mrshudson618 That's what I was thinking I'd do, but I guess I'm frustrated because I just went out and bought bigger prefolds... tried skipping a size to save money... kind of blew up in my face because they are WAY too big for him. Now his covers won't fit over the prefolds I bought and he is leaking. Now I either have to buy smaller prefolds or try a different system. I'm just at a loss.

I realize AIOs and pockets are more expensive which is why we went with prefolds to begin with. I'm cheap though... I will scour craigslist/ebay/etc. to find good deals on used ones. Just want to know what to look for.

  • Agree that flats might be something to explore if you don't want to keep buying new sizes of prefolds. Then later if your LO gets squirmy during changes you can stuff them into your pockets.

DS started fitting into OS diapers around 4-5 months, and is pretty darn skinny. We've had good luck with Oh Katy and Thirsties pockets, Grovia AIO and Simplex, both 2.0 and OS. At 21 months he is still under 20 lbs and can still wear the 2.0s.
  • Our current favorites for my 10 lb, 22.25 inch,  2.5 month old are BG freetimes, Kawaii  P&N and aplix HD2, and Bumkins.  With the Bumkins, I love the trim fit and softness of the PUL but dislike that there are 5 snaps on each side.

Do you have bigger covers? Like OS ones??

You can fold down the back/ front of the prefolds to make them fit better.

Also so you snappi them? That helps them be more trim than just trifolding, especially if they are a bigger size.

  • @yellowlily2013 I only have Thirsties size one covers, so that's part of the problem. I do Snappi and fold down the front.... but we're talking like 6 inches of extra material. It's crazy!

  • I'd size up in covers first. And if you still really dislike it buy some flats. Or buy both flats and covers at once! You know... Save on shipping. ;)

We really like the flip covers and blueberry ones.

Oh, yeah - fitting a medium prefold under a Thirsties size 1 cover is probably pretty hard. I would try a bigger cover before giving up on the medium PFs, especially if your LO is a heavy wetter.  I went from infant PFs to mediums with DD when she was about 12 lbs, so it can be done. With a larger cover you'll only need to fold down a couple of inches. Look up 'reverse angel wing fold' for a trim-ish, front-folding option for a too-long prefold.

  • I love our BumGenius 4.0s. They fit pretty early and get decently big.

  • I love my BB as well, I skipped the small inserts, though ds will be needing large inserts in the not too distant future.  I also use them with prefolds without issue.

The poop does get on the cover frequently but it's nbd since the covers need washing periodically anyway and I have 6 covers.  The poop has yet to escape the cover though.  I usually snap in the inserts into all 6 covers the night before and add 1-2 more changes during the day so every cover gets used daily and then wash when pooped on with an occasional all cover washing in case one has escaped washing.

  • Yup, our size one covers stopped fitting well at about 3 months, and we were out of them completely by about 4 1/2 months. ( we would have switched sooner but were waiting for the rest of my size twos to come in, so when it got close to laundry time we were just stuffing prefolds back in whenever they tried to escape lol!)

  • I got an email last week the Jillian's Drawers restocked their gently used diaper page ... I think they usually have a variety of stuff that people send back from their diaper trials. Might be a good place to pick up a few things to try.
  • Am I the only person who only bought two sizes of prefolds?!?

  • We have 24 ea. of the GMD yellow edge and red edge. I also bought a dozen brown edge before we left the US because I had no idea how long the red edge would last us, which it turns out, forever. I occasionally use the browns as changing pads.

We have a few NB sized prefolds from our diaper trial, but DS outgrew them during the trial. I'd probably pick up a few orange edge if I need to build a NB stash, though.
