Alcohol preferences while TTC

I was curious what everyone else does/doesn't do while TTC.

My RE says to act like I'm already pregnant, even before the TWW/IUI.

Do you drink alcohol while TTC?

Re: Alcohol preferences while TTC

  • I've never been a big drinker, but I don't actively abstain.  If we go out to dinner I might have a mixed drink.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • I did.  I kept it in moderation.  A beer or glass of wine in the evening helps me relax.  And since stress can absolutely affect fertility in a negative way (and I don't know that there's been any conclusive proof that alcohol does), I decided to stay relaxed.  At the time I had an extremely stressful job.

  • I used to be a social drinker.  I def cut back while ttc, but my Re said it was not a big deal.  It was funny because the last IUI and during the TWW I had no desire to drink.  Then we found out we were pregnant.  I still have no desire, which I thought I would.  My wife has beer in the house, but rarely drinks anymore either.

  • I definitely cut back before and during TTC, not that I was drinking a ton before, maybe a few beers a week.

That being said I did have a tasty brew the night we conceived and a couple of sips of wine the next few days. I did completely give up caffeine though. The RE we saw said that it was WAY more important to not drink coffee while TTC than during pregnancy so I switched to decaf months before our first insemination.

  • For me, I enjoy drinking, socially with friends. But since TTC I haven't been drinking at all. Well, I take that back, there were 3 days between getting my BFN and starting clomid again...I'm pretty sure I made up for the entire 30 days of not drinking in those 3 days. :) It also just so happened to be over superbowl weekend, lucky me.
  • I stopped a few days before IVF transfers, both alcohol and caffeine. I also felt feeling normal and relaxed was a good choice for me!

  • What I understand is that dehydration is the only real issue at play while TTC. So if you're not drinking enough to have to worry about not being adequately hydrated, I say go for it!
Our nurse recommended drinking in moderation if we wanted during our IVF cycle.
    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255
    1st ultrasound (3/6  6w 1d): TWINS!!!! Twin A measuring 6w1d with a heartbeat of 118bpm. Twin B measuring 6w0d with a heartbeat of 113bpm.

***July 18, 2014 we lost our beautiful babies at 21 weeks gestation. They were born too early. Tavin Sara T. and Casey Elizabeth T. are beautiful and precious and we will love them and miss them forever.***

    FET #1 December 2014
Intralipid infusion on Dec 10. Transfer of 1 day 3 nine-cell embryo into my uterus on Dec. 19. (acupuncture immediately before and after)

  • I'm not a big drinker (anymore) so I don't drink at all right now except an occasional glass of wine. It's all too sugary for me. I am also not a caffeine person, so that was easy to give up on, too.

This very moment I am missing motrin. I know I can take it because I'm only CD 4, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I have a massive headache (I'm assuming from Femara) and tylenol isn't cutting it.

    The things we do...

TTC our first. Married to, and madly in love with, my beautiful wife. Living with our fur baby and enjoying 19 nieces and nephews.

  • I started weaning myself off caffeine months before we started TTC (I was that addicted!). Since starting TTC, I've cut back on alcohol, but I'll still indulge occaisionally as long as I'm between CD1 and IUI.

    Me: 28 DW: 28

Together since 5/30/02. Married since 8/31/08

    IUI#3 - 2/21/14 = BFN

    IUI#4 - 3/23/14

  • When I first started TTC, I was working with a midwife practice.  The midwife at my preconception consult suggested I stop drinking alcohol completely because it affects fertility.  I wasn't really convinced it was necessary, but I wanted to get pregnant as quickly and easily as possible, so I did it.  So much for helping me get pregnant.

After a few IUIs and some weird timing issues, I switched to an RE who said that drinking alcohol in moderation was just fine pre-IUI -- she did advise me to "act like you're pregnant" during the 2WW.

  • As I respond to this, I'm sitting on the couch with a glass of Red Cat...deliciously sweet red wine for those who haven't heard of it.  I'm not a huge drinker, though I've drank more in the past 6 months than probably in my entire life up to that point.  That being said...I can get tipsy off of one Michelob Ultra.  I'm not a beer drinker normally though.  Anyway, when we first started I stopped drinking alcohol.  Then we had our first BFN.  Since then, I have just drank in moderation for the most part.  I let loose a little bit before Christmas, but I also was waiting for my period to start after the surgery so that we could get going again.  I don't think a little here and there is a big deal.  During the TWW I do not drink and I do pretend like I'm already pregnant.

@GoaliesWife123 - I also have had a headache for the past few days, which I contribute to the Gonal-F.  I have yet to take anything for it. Maybe the wine will help...

    Me: 30  DW (aka C): 29

I was part of the drink until pink club (until I saw two pink lines on a pregnancy test). That being said, I pretty much only drink wine and not more than 1-2 glasses. I needed to act as "normal" as possible during my TWW to feel sane.

I gave up caffeine when we decided to start trying. I did this only because I didn't want to have first tri symptoms and caffeine withdrawal symptoms at the same time. I started drinking caffeine again in moderation in my third trimester.

  • I think C and I both sit in the camp of acting as though you are pregnant during the TWW. That being said, after nine IUIs there have been occasions where drinking has happened but we really try to limit it. I think with most of the restrictions, talk to your DR/midwife, do your research and listen to what your heart says. There will always be someone who doesn't agree with your caffiene, lunchmeat, ect. You need to make sure that you are comfortable with what you are putting in your body. This process is wacky so be good to yourself and hang in there! :-)
