STM+ Moms how do you avoid bangs?

DD hair is getting pretty long upfront. Everyone keeps saying, that I'll have to cut her hair soon. I don't want to because I fear this will lead down the road of bangs. I had a heck of a time with getting a part after I grew out my bangs. Don't want to do that to DD. Any suggestions on what to do.

Re: STM+ Moms how do you avoid bangs?

  • Figure out which way her hair naturally parts and clip it to that side!

  • Not really seeing a natural part. She may have dumb colic a like her Mom. I'll play around with it and see what I can do. Wasn't sure if barrettes were a good idea at this stage of the game.

  • Sadly, it's very difficult. Babys and toddlers hair almost always grows straight forward. DD1 was 3 when her hair finally started to part naturally. DD2 still has her hair growing forward. I fought to grow out her bangs for months but I had to give in and have them cut. Eventually we can let them grow out. I probably won't fight it with DD3 and just go straight to bangs.

  • Clip to the side... But I'm a little jealous cause dd's hair didn't get long enough to need a clip until about 12 mos.

  • Hmmm.... i would just make a part and clip it to any side then. That's about all you can do if you don't want to cut bangs.... hopefully you can find something that works!

  • People told be before dd1's first birthday that I would "have" to cut her hair soon.  That's BS!  She will be 3 in June and I still haven't cut her hair.  It's hard getting past that awkward stage, but it's worth it once you do.  If you cut them, then you have to keep cutting them.  Or you can just let them grow.

I honestly don't know when I will cut her hair for the first time.  Maybe sometime in her third year?  or when she asks?  or when it starts to look unhealthy?
  • Maybe you can just get some cute little clips and brush it that way. LO doesn't have long hair but when she gets out of the bath I always brush it towards the side.

Lol. DD's hair still isn't long enough to need to clip to the side and she is almost 2! My friends just did the side clip thing until hair was long enough for a ponytail or pigtails.

  • I guess I should clarify, my girls wouldn't tolerate clips or headbands. They barely let me have any fun with their hair. Because of that they have chin length hair styles.

I think I will give this a try!

  • Okay, so I am on girl #3 and we have managed to avoid bangs so far on all of them.

First when their hair is wet we part it, if there is a natural part. If not we just brush it straight back.

For styling, in the beginning, we use little clips or small rubberbands. The bands were similiar to those used on the braces. We buy a lot of hair things at the dollar store.

Hair is a pet peeve for me. If they don't let me do it to keep it out of their face then cutting it is an option but never bangs. I don't want the maintenance.

  • We cut DD1 hair when she was 2. But not the bang area ever. That part of her hair grows the slowest. I keep pulling it back with hair tied clips etc. I dont love the bang look on little girls either. We cut DD hair bc the ends were all scraggly looking, so she just had a trim.

  • I just used clips on DD's hair when she was younger to pull the bangs to the side. She wore clips until she was around 3. For babies it helps to use ones with the foam backing, since it sticks better to thin baby hair. My DD has curly hair, so I knew I didn't want her to have bangs. We trimmed the mullet in the back a couple times when she was younger since the back always grows fastest, but she just went and had her hair trimmed at the salon for the first time last week. She's almost 5 and her hair is midway down her back. She was bald until she was 1, but once it starts growing, it grows quickly.

Just do the little waterspout ponytail! It should go up in a small barrette since her hair is so fine. That's what I did with DD.

We do this sometimes with DD1. One of her teachers said she looked like a unicorn.
DD1 isn't crazy about hair stuff, or keeping it in her hair at least. I try to give her lots of options - headbands, clips, barrettes, pony tail holders. None of them stay in too long. Her hair is just about long enough to tuck behind her ears, but it doesn't stay there too long.
Her hair seemed to grow straight forward and we started out sweeping it to either side. I have since found a section of her hairline that I think pushes it one way over the other.

I'm trying to figure out what to do about a double crown. Anybody have any ideas?
  • I know this sounds like "Something About Mary," but I put a little lotion in my hair when I was growing my bangs out and it helped keep them to the side. I just made sure not to use a greasy lotion.
  • I didn't cut DD's hair until right after her 4th bday. And even then, just the back to level it of. She did go through a long time of an awkward "point" that the front of her hair naturally positioned itself. It's finally looking better and I'm glad we rode it out. image

  • Ha, I wish DD had hair long enough to worry about this, but she is still a little pixie girl.  At least she has some hair at all!  :P

DD was born with a baby wig.  I had to trim her mullet when she was 3 months old.  My SIL gave me these teeny clips to use to keep her bangs out of her face (my nieces used them).  I don't know where she found them, but they were about an inch long.  DD also rocked the Pebbles ponytail from about 5-12 months; you can get the little ponytail holders at Target.

She didn't get her first real haircut until she was 2.  We managed to avoid bangs until last year when she gave herself a haircut- we're now working on growing them out and they're at that point where they're not quite long enough to tuck behind her ears.  I hate bangs with the fire of a thousand suns.

  • Lol I wish I could clip DS hair to the side...it's getting so long and is always in front of his ears...my mom said it's tradition not to cut a baby's hair till at least one. I'm nervous as to what his hair will look like by the time he's 1! A little jealous of you girl mamas, cause at least u can clip it or hide it with an obnoxiously big headband ;)
  • I agree with all of the above. To part Lila's hair, I just go straight out from her crown and brush it to the side every chance I get. Sometimes I use a clip, but her hair is thicker than it is long, so there's lots of poky little stray hairs that escape.

  • I hadn't even thought about hair issues. LO is finally getting enough hair to have a tiny mo hawk in the middle, we love it! Sounds like the clipping to the side idea is a good idea, maybe we will start doing that when LO has enough hair, you know in 2 years.

I started doing the side part on Clara pretty much right away (lotsa hair here). It didnt have a directional preference, so i just picked a side. When it creeps down her face sometimes, I just swipe it back so it's parted again. I comb it that way after her bath and in the morning. It is already pretty well trained.

Eta this doesn't require clips, at least not so far.
