Jaundice help

So dd is officially mildly jaundice, we are just suppose to watch her and if we feel worried being her in for a blood test again, otherwise it should be near peak and it's relatively low compared to dd1. However, I know she needs to eat (duh) and she is so sleepy I can't wake her for more than a few minutes at a time. My boobs are killing me and she needs to eat. Remind me how you wake a sleepy newborn!!
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Re: Jaundice help

  • I don't know, good luck with that, dd was impossible to get up. But I have heard that keeping a baby in sunlight can help with mild jaundice. So if.you keep the pnp or crib or whatever near a window with the curtains open, it could help. Just wanted to mention it.

  • One of my babies was an extremely sleepy newborn! I'd tickle her between her nose and lip or under her chin (like on the neck) with the corner of a burp cloth while I BF'd. It worked, well, most if the time.

  • Wet cloth, diaper change, tickle toes. The sunlight thing helps too. Good thing it is sunny today!

  • DS wasn't jaundiced but he didn't want to wake up to eat. Strip her down to a diaper, change her diaper, put cold hands on her, a cool wash cloth on her feet, lotion her skin etc. Anything that is too annoying for her to sleep through.

  • Drew was jaundiced too. I would flick his cheek to wake him up to eat. He ended up having to be readmitted to spend 12 hours under the bili lights, but was fine after that! I pushed back and avoided having to bottle or formula feed him through it (they were really trying to push formula as his was "breastmilk jaundice" but I avoided that).

  • i couldn't take it anymore, I got out my pump to give myself some relief and at least tell my body the baby needs the food. As soon as I turned it on, she woke up and ate like a champ. I'm thinking helping the let down process helped her get going. Now I have a small bottle for her, DH is going to be excited :)

  • I second (third? fourth?) stripping her down. I'll rub a finger under DS's chin to stimulate the swallowing reflex and tickle his ribs to wake him up. If you can, nurse next to a sunny window. You can also have your H mess with her a little...sometimes it helps to enlist a second person.

DH is at work, otherwise he is terrific about being extremely irritating until she wakes up, lol.

  • THanks guys, blowing on her and the wet cloth on her neck and feet seems to have perked her up!
