Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

15 month old Sleep Regression

My LO was a great sleeper and had been sleeping thru the night. Suddenly about 3 weeks ago. He started waking up every night 1-3 times a night. He has some more teeth coming in so I have tried giving him some motrin before bed to see if that helps and it does not, he is still getting up every night.  We are now on week 3.

I just recently got a noise machine to see if the "white noise" would help him stay asleep and that doesn't seem to be working either.

Any one else experience this? Any other suggestions?

Re: 15 month old Sleep Regression

  • Honestly, my son has gone through so many sleep regressions. He will sleep 10-11 hours straight for a few months and then have a month of hell. These are the ones I can remember: 4 months, 9 months, 1 year, 15 months and now (17.5 months). I just have to keep telling myself that I will sleep again when he's in highschool. For us, it's usually just something that he snaps out of. Sorry that I don't have any advice, just sympathy.

Pretty much this.  Many kids go through several sleep regressions and this is probably another one.  I've had some last as long as six weeks so I feel your pain.  But, honestly, there's probably not a whole lot more you can do.  Just hope it passes soon.

  • No real advice but hopefully this is just a phase.

We just went through 2 weeks of what you described, though I'd say DS woke up 10 nights out of the 14 nights.  However, he was sick (had a cold) + he cut his 3rd molar.  We were giving him motrin at bedtime and some nights it helped and some nights not.  I seriously thought this was never going to end!

What do you do when he wakes up?  Can you let him be and see if he'll put himself back to sleep without any help?

Hope your LO will go back to being a great sleeper soon!

  • My 16M dd has never been a good sleeper, and this past month has been the worst. I know it's teething, and I cannot wait for it to be over. Sorry you and your lo are dealing with it too. : ((
  • Well glad to hear I am not the only one!

well we had his 15mth appt on Wed the dr said it could be: just a phase, night terrors & teething or a mix of them all.

then bammm 2 nights in a row he slept thru the night! WOW...

he is also cutting his molars, no ear infection or sick. I do think he had a night terror or maybe several. there were some nights that just werent the same as others when he got up. but hopefully we are back to the sleeping all night :)

Hope all your LO's get back to sleeping too ...

  • My first thought honestly was does he have an ear infection? It took us 2 weeks to realize DD had one cause her only symptom was increased waking at night... DD also doesn't respond at all to motrin for some reason, and tylenol works great but only for 4-5 hours, so it wasn't helping at all for her wake-ups when we tried that thinking it may have been teeth also.

If no ear infection then unfortunately it is probably just a phase, wonder week, developmental skill change, growth spurt, etc... and will take time to pass.

I agree with this - all of DS ear infections could be tied back to waking multiple times in the night.  It can hurt that get it checked out to rule it out.
