Mastitis $5.99

So I have pretty much all the symptoms of mastitis. I wanted to see if its actually mastitis or if its the flu. Called my nurse advice line to see if I should come in and they were gonna check with my doc. That was at 1 pm. I called back at 4 and they still hadn't talked to her. Its now 4:45 and I'm sure the office is closing soon.

I guess my question is, anything I can be doing? I'm curled up and in bed and have been napping on and off. The worst part is the fever and the chills. Am I OK to take Tylenol or should I wait until later after I'm sure they aren't gonna get back to me today? I know I should also put a warm wash cloth on the boob, right? Any other suggestions? Also, should I stay away from LO in case its actually something worse?

Any help from BTDT mamas would be much appreciated...

Re: Mastitis $5.99

  • I had mastitis... giant clogged duct and fever and chills. I nursed a ton plus pumped, lots of hot showers and warm wash cloths, breast massage, and basically put myself on bed rest. I hope you feel better soon.

  • Nurse as much as possible. Stay in bed. Try and dangle feed when you can and when baby is done feeding stay in a dangling position and do massage and hand compressions if possible. I can't remember of I took Tylenol or not? Also if you have a heating pad side-lie on it with the affected boob. Good luck

  • Thanks guys. The duct is only slightly clogged I think. But there is a small hard spot and its red. Its actually been clogged worse. But the fever and chills are killing me. And a head ache. I just wasn't sure if there is anything safe to take for those symptoms.

  • @littlelegslo - what is dangle feeding?

  • Have baby lie on their back on the bed and then get on all fours over babyand dangle your boob over their mouth and let them eat that way. Gravity is supposed to help and the flow is much easier to unclog the duct.

  • Thanks , I haven't tried that position before. I'll give that a shot.

  • You want to get antibiotics as soon as possible tomorrow. Rarely have I had as intense a fever as I did with mastitis.

  • So glad you asked this! I developed a fever this afternoon out of nowhere. It didn't dawn on me until later that maybe it's mastitis. I don't have any other symptoms except a fever and chills though - and some very slight pains in one breast every now and then. I'm watching closely and will call in the morning if it continues. I'm guessing it's this or the flu! Neither of which I want. My husband JUST returned home from some long business traveling and we made all kinds of plans as a family this weekend. Sucks. :(( hope you feel better ASAP @ilovemyducks21
  • I forgot to add that I did take Tylenol.

This is weird, but a friend said they had her husband suck on her nipple really hard to get the clog out. He could suck harder than the baby.

    I've heard of this too.

My dr. recommended this and he also said if your boobs are big enough you could try to do it yourself. Adult suction is much stronger than a baby. If I were to get mastitis again I would try it in a heart beat.

  • Thanks all! The doc called me back and I got the antibiotics tonight. Tylenol and a hot shower really helped with the fever. If the duct doesn't clear up soon I'll definitely try some of these things you all are suggesting.

  • I've had it three times between my two kids, the first time being the worst because I let it go the longest before realizing what it was (and it seemed to come suddenly out of no where). Nurse, nurse, nurse and lots of warm compresses and massages.

With the antibiotics you will feel so much better within 24 hours or so. Glad you were able to get them today. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Glad you got antibiotics. Feel better! I have to add that if I asked my DH to suck my breast to get milk out I think he'd puke. He gets grossed out about even having my milk touch him. Big baby. Or actually not bc a baby wouldn't mind.
