  Loooove our Dyson. It's pricey but totally worth it for us. We have both carper and hardwood.

  We have two Dysons (three story house)--one of them we bought inexpensively (is that a word??) on woot.com, I think they have them on there fairly often--it's a "deal a day" website.

  Kenmore Whispertone.  Have had it 10 years now.  Love it, and reasonably priced.

  YES YES YES to the Dyson Animal.  It's amazing.  The first time I vacuumed I was both amazed and horrified by the amount it sucked up.  YES, it is expensive but if you look around you can find a good deal.  We actually got ours from Craigslist for $100 because a guy had sent his in to get repaired and they sent him back two!
