Toddlers: 24 Months+

board books & age

So my 2.5 y.o. has quite the collection of board books. While they are great and he still loves them, did you find there was an age where LO kind of lost interest and wanted larger books with soft pages, etc? I am holding off on that stage due to increased ripped pages, etc. While he has some, the majority are hard books. I kind of was thinking this might be a silly question to even ask anyways, since a book is a book but I just wondered if toddlers start to actually ignore the smaller board books and go right for the other kind. Experiences?

Re: board books & age

  • DS, who is 3 yrs 4 mos, still likes his board books, but he is past the ripping pages stage, so he loves paper-paged books, too. To him, it doesn't matter what format the book is in, so long as it's a story he likes! :-) We definitely have a bunch of board books that are very "baby", though, so he's outgrown the content of them. We've moved those into his soon-to-be baby brother's room.

  • DD#1 2.5 loves all books and it doesn't matter the format. I try to buy board books though because DD#2 destroys paper books. The baby board books have been moved to DD#2's room.

  • DS still loves his board books, and has some of each. He cares more about the stories and pictures now than the material the book is made out of.

This. DD is just over 2.5 and has been fine with paper books for about 6 or so months. More so the story than the texture. Since we have so many paper books around with DS coming along first, she really didn't do much destroying or tearing of pages. We've taped up a few pages along the way but nothing more than a few.

  • My 2.5 year old is into regular books right now. Something about the improved art/graphics she loves.

However, she still has a ton of board books and loves them for the car or when she reads to herself at bed.

I weed books out more based on her interest in them rather than board vs. paper at this point. I don't care what she "reads."

  • My 2 and 4 year olds love all of their books still. We probably have more paper-page books than board books at this point and I can only think of one with a ripped page.
  • My nearly 7 year old kid still loves some of our board books! I think around 2.5/3 ish the kids attention spans start to lengthen and you can usually get them to sit and listen to longer books (of course, very kid dependent). But we have board book versions of many classic stories and, like I said, my 7 year old still appreciates them...along with his Beast Quest and Magic Treehouse series.

  • My son is 26 months and I'd say since about 2 he's been good with paper books. We have a mix and have mainly board books in the playroom b/c of his younger brother.

  • I keep a stash of the board books in the car. They can handle being stepped on and moved around. I try to keep a range of different types for all of the kids. It helps!
  • Thanks ladies. All of your replies were super informative!
