When do kids start drinking soda??

I went to a meeting yesterday at Lydia's school, it's just a bunch of parents getting together. We all sign in and write down who our kids teachers are and the class with the most parents gets to have a party. They've done popcorn, ice cream sundaes, things like that. A parent suggested a root beer float party and the parents of the winning class thought it was a great idea. They are 2nd graders! That seems too young to be drinking soda. I can't remember when I started drinking it but, man, I doubt I was that young! What do you all think??

Re: When do kids start drinking soda??

  • I don't know, my mom was kind of a health nut but I feel like I had probably had soda by 2nd grade. Likely at some kid's birthday party or something. We certainly didn't have it regularly but I think a special occasion would have been fine.

Root beer floats are soda and Ice cream. Those kids are going to be climbing the walls. Yikes. But I would probably grumble and let them do it. It is just one time.

  • Huh. Maybe I need to unclench a little - HAHA! I just feel like 2nd graders are still such little kids!

  • I wouldn't love it at 2nd grade but as a treat/party I wouldn't put up a fuss.

DD's class (preschool 4s) is having an ice cream sundae party for valentine's day. She'll probably end up w/ just as much HFCS and food dyes as she would from soda. And root beer is caffeine free, right?
Some root beer is caffeine free and some isn't. Differs by brand.

  • Eh, I'm pretty strict on day to day foods, but that as a treat wouldn't bother me. A few times a year (Christmas, Easter, Mothers Day, Thanksgiving) I let the girls split a can of sprite with dinner. They otherwise get milk or water to drink and eat a very healthy diet, but I loosen up a lot for special occasions.

  • For a one time treat, that wouldn't bother me.  Although, I don't think my 6 year old DD would like root beer.  She had soda one time at a birthday party and didn't like it.  I'm sure she would still have the ice cream part of the root beer float.

I don't disagree at all. the only thing that annoys me is that every thing is a "special occasion" in school, too. It can end up being a lot of crap if the teachers don't make some of the parties healthier or if the parents care, you know?

I don't stop them from participating, or complain, and I bring a homemade or healthier option when asked, but most other parents don't.

Did I tell you guys that one of the boy's grandmas in DD's class didn't know what "cheese cubes or cheese slices," were? She said, "Oh, I guess you just buy cheese and cut it? I thought it said cheetos or something." She decided to bring jello instead.
That's true. Our school has a ridiculously strict snack list. It's dairy free, nut free and peanut free. Nothing with sugar as the first, second or third ingredient. I think there are about 20 acceptable foods on it plus any fresh fruits and veggies. No cakes/cupcakes or anything else. At times I think it's far too restrictive (it includes in class parties and sending things home, so you have to be careful not to buy the Valentines cards that include lollipops, etc) but in general I'm pleased with it since it means even class parties are not over the top unhealthy. Although fruit snacks and fruit roll ups are allowed, which I give the side eye.

  • Oh, and my kids get seltzer with a splash of cranberry juice regularly (usually every Sunday with dinner) and love the carbonation lol!

  • Mine is in second grade and she's never had soda. I don't allow at home, and at parties she prefers to drink water or juice.

That said, for a special occasion (party) I wouldn't be opposed at this age. Unless the special occasion is happening every week... I don't think kids need soda that much, IMO.

Well, I had let my kids have a sip of my sprite and they hated it (carbonation is "too spicy" lol) and I would allow a root beer float as a treat but to drink regularly? I would discourage as long as possible.

Ha DD called my soda "spicy" too!

  • DS is almost six and has only ever had a sip of soda (by accident). I wouldn't have a problem with him having a root beer float as a special treat.

  • Never? I mean sips here & there, sure. But it has so much sugar. Z would be running around on the ceiling.

Edit. She's never had soda. She tried fizzy water once & spit it out everywhere. She has grabbed my hubby's iced coffee & taken a sip thinking it was water though. Oops.

I hope they never drink soda, but I know that's unrealistic.  We don't drink it and we don't ave it in the house so IDK but I'm sure they'll encounter it at a birthday party somewhere down the line.
We didn't start offering it until my oldest tried it at a party. I wasn't thrilled but got over it. DH and I don't drink it and don't like it. But on a major holiday a few times a year I think it's no worse than anything else they'll have. I bought a 12 pack of sprite cans 18 months ago and it's less than half gone lol! I suspect some cans will expire before we finish it.

Well if you ask a certain poster here it is totes nbd to give your toddler soda in a sippy cup. You know, as a treat. I don't think that's a big deal. I mean I wouldn't suggest it, but a one time thing for a surprise? Meh. Its no worse than an ice cream sundae party to me.

    Uhh what?!
