SWMR - Valentine's day vent

DH and I really don't do much for Valentine's day, but I bought 2 filet mignons to have for dinner tonight after the kids go to bed.

Last night, our nanny had to stay late (6pm) because DH was out of town.  She typically makes dinner for the kids on nights like this, and I don't usually give her any instructions.  She just finds something.

See where I'm going?  She cooked the filets.  DD1 doesn't eat steak - she ate a grilled cheese.  So she cooked them both, gave a little bit to DD2 (11 months), and ate the rest of one.  She left the other one for me for dinner.  By the time I got home, it was cold and gross, so I just put it in the fridge.  Also, she dredged it in flour before she cooked it - almost like chicken fried steak... with a FILET.

I'm really annoyed.  But it's probably on me, since I didn't specifically tell her NOT to cook them.  Oh well.  Takeout it is.

Re: SWMR - Valentine's day vent

  • My jaw dropped. That... SUCKS. I hope y'all are at least having a tasty wine with your takeout tonight.

  • That is really, really weird to me.  I would think it's common sense that:

    a) you doing cook filet for kids
    b) the filets were probably for Valentine's Day, duh.

Frying a filet?  And feeding it to an 11 month old??
    :-O

Is your nanny from another culture/country?  My MIL does really weird things with food.

Or is she young?  I never learned to cook as a kid/teen, and it's only in my late 20s that I learned to identify Filet Mignon from any other cut of beef.

  • Who on earth thinks steak is a good choice for little kids??? I would be so mad. We don't have valentines plans either, sorry for your disappointment :(

  • I'm sorry that sucks.  I would be extremely frustrated and disappointed.  But I wouldn't fault the nanny.  Clear instructions set clear expectations.
  • I don't think she had any reason to think it wasn't ok to grab whatever she could find in the fridge as she had before. She was probably half-blinded by the idea of getting to have a steak herself as she decided on what to do for dinner.

That said, I'd casually mention it or make a joke. Maybe give her a cheesy V-Day card and say, "I was going to give this to my DH along with the steak, but it looks like you're my valentine this year." It might help her to think more critically in the future without making a big deal out of it.

DD had steak at 6 months old. Pretty common for BLW. What's the problem?

    Sorry, OP. That sucks.
I honestly don't know how you would eat steak without teeth? Not trying to offend. We did mostly purées and I was paranoid about them choking on bananas, so this is new to me.

I'm sorry that your steak dinner isn't happening. However, I think it was an honest on your nanny's part. Even w DH I have to be explicit about any food I'm saving. Lame, but it is what it is...

No. It is not the nanny's fault at all. I would not say anything to her, and in the future I would leave specific instructions for what to cook.

Sorry, OP. Have a glass of wine and laugh it off.

You gum it a lot.  Both my kids at steak by 7 months as well. We did BLW.  DS is still toothless but can gum steak just fine
Ours had roast beef around 7 mos. We had it cut-up so fine it looked like dog food. He was a fan. Hopefully we didn't set him to eat actual dog food later on.

    Wow, assuming the worst, maybe?

I don't think a nanny who dredged filet in flour and tried to feed it to babies is enough of a meat connoisseur to have greedily hatched a plan to steal fancy steak and play dumb about it.
The total opposite, actually. I was thinking about what I would be thinking if I saw a steak and the general rule was everything in the fridge was fair game (no pun intended).

Omg, when I was 22 and broke, I once stuffed a sandwich ziplock full of dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets while babysitting and took them home with me to eat.  I can't believe I did that!! Well, that's what happens you pay a greedy meat connoisseur $8/hour to watch 4 kids.

Both of my kids have eaten dog food, I guess that's my Friday confession.

My Friday confession: I have eaten dog food. Even after my parents told me to stop.

Ah, I think I got lost in the negatives there... "I don't think she had any reason to think it wasn't ok" means "she reasonably thought it was okay" right?  I originally thought you were saying she should have known she shouldn't eat it.

  • Oh, I'm absolutely not faulting her - like I said, probably my fault for not explicitly telling her that I'd planned to have them for dinner tonight.  I'm not going to say a word about it!  I'm just going to make sure that if I'm saving food for something that I tell her in the future.  As the day has gone on, I'm less annoyed, and more amused by the whole thing.  Not a big deal at all.

And our DD2 LOVES steak.  We grind it up since she's just getting teeth now, and we can't get it to her fast enough.  We put some on her tray, and put the rest in her puree, and she screams at us to feed her faster!
  • Now I really want a nice steak for dinner.  @mae0111 I'm blaming you for this craving.
I really want steak for dinner too!!!  But mine's gone...  =((

I just went to the store and bought filets after reading this post.

Sorry this happened OP.  I'd be annoyed to, not at the nanny, just that it happened, but would probably pick up a couple more steaks on my way home.

Can you grab some at the store on the way home? Or maybe some place delivers?
I'm WFH, but I might run out and grab a couple more.  The weather was awful earlier (snow), but it looks like it's clearing up.
  • This is making me realize I have absolutely no dinner planned for tonight, I think well get takeout.

This. Add me to the camp of steak for babies. DS2 would growl at the sight of meat at 11 months! He did great as long as the meat was soft.

But steak in flour? - I would give her a proper recipe just to make the world a better place :)

My old babysitter when I was young would bring tupperware over to our house and box up our leftovers to take home with her. My mom could not understand where the two lasagnas she had made for the week had gone by Tuesday...and she was not 22!

      @-)

  • :( That stinks.  and she really did not even get to enjoy a good filet.  She dredged it in flour - gross.

  • :(

That's crazy.  I bet she had no idea what kind of money she was dredging in flour.

Get some really really good take out!!
  • Ha, ha!  Yep, that is not good!
