Pregnant after a Loss

Unhappy VDay to me - GBS+

This little girl is clearly set to become an overachiever. 34 weeks tomorrow (Friday). Already had a lovely UTI, resistant to the antibiotics resulting in my fun 50 hr L&D stay last week for a kidney infection and IV antibiotics. Follow up a week later today with my doctor. UTI cultures from 2 weeks ago showed I'm Group B Strep positive. And on oral antibiotics through the rest of this pregnancy (my poor tummy!!) **sigh**

Oh, and still 50% effaced from last week but newly 1 cm dialated. Which, I know logically I could sit at for quite a while and I'm trying to take my doctor saying she's "fairly" confident we'll get to 37 weeks with a grain of salt, but that if labor begins from today on, baby's coming and they won't stop it. Eek! So much to take in much earlier than I'd thought.

So I'm being threatened with bed rest next week if I've progressed any more. I have a really low impact job - in Communications and at a desk most of the time but my supervisor already said to just plan to work from home starting next week at least 1-2 days so I can be working laying down to try and see if that helps. Fingers crossed y'all!!

It's hard bc the contractions I'm having, I really honest to god can barely tell are happening, so I know I'm only catching random ones I'm sure. I feel silly and dumb sometimes. Clearly they're enough to cause some kind of progression but with my tendency for high pain tolerance it's so hard to tell unless I really get tight in the belly. I'm a ftm and even watching it on the monitors while in the hospital it still just kinda felt like the baby moving or stretching funny. I'm just hoping everyone is right when they say "you'll know" when it's the real thing. This GBS + has me worried ill labor longer than I'm supposed to w/o knowing and not get hooked up to the antibiotics I'll now need once I do begin actual labor since I'm high risk in time.

Just trying not to stress, get stuff done and keep baby girl Cooking as long as I can. But nervous now .... Anyone else deal with PGAL, GBS + and anything like this? Would love some encouraging words (I'm still hoping I go 40 weeks despite the doctors lack of confidence). Sorry for the long vent! And thanks for reading!

I'd post an early Valentine if I weren't mobile tonight! Will update tomorrow though ;-)

I was GBS+ with dd. It's perfectly fine to labor without meds- it's just once your water breaks that you need to be on them. They want to get two doses in before LO's arrival, and for most moms (especially FTMs) that's plenty of time. Also, if you don't get enough, they'll just give some to baby after arrival. Risk of transmission is something like 1:400 untreated, 1:2,000 treated, so odds are pretty good either way, it's just a matter of monitoring if you wind up on the low end of the odds.

  • I had GBS with my DD. I just made sure I got into labor and delivery with time to spare. They hook you up to IV antibiotics. It was no big deal. Hugs.

  • I'm sorry. *hugs*  I was GBS+ with DS but I was already scheduled for an induction the night I went into labor so I was at the hospital when everything really started. I don't even remember at what point they started administering the antibiotics, to be honest. I've known people who had been + and labored so quickly they didn't even have a chance to have the doses they needed and everything was fine. I would just check with your doctor at what point they prefer for you to get to the hospital.
  • No advice, just wanted to offer hugs! I hope baby girl gets comfy in there and hangs out until you are full term!!

  • Thanks ladies - I appreciate the war stories ;-) Makes me feel a bit better to say the least knowing A) I'm not crazy for feeling a bit stressed about it but that B) its not as big of a deal as my loving mother tried to make it out to be last night. Ugh drama queen. I love her, but good lord. So here's hoping baby girl stays tucked away til 40 weeks like I'd always kinda thought she does, but if she comes early, we'll be ready after the next week or so!

I am an L&D nurse. GBS is totally not that big of a deal. They will start you with the first dose of penicillin when you get admitted to L&D and it runs for 1 hour. Then four hours latter you get a second dose. Having 2 doses is best. They will continue to give you additional doses every 4 hours until delivery. Also after birth they will do vitals every 4 hours on baby instead of every 8 hours. The nurse will let the pediatrician know you were GBS + and how many doses you received in labor. Also just because you are currently GBS + doesn't mean you always will be, that's why they wait until 34 weeks to test. Vaginal bacteria are constantly changing.

  • Thank you @Waliany2015 - I REALLY appreciate that explanation! Helps a lot - I'm definitely one who likes to know everything so going in with that expectation will be a huge help!

PS - can you tell my mom that so she quits telling me to insist on a C-Section, LOL ;-) Drama Queen has arisen. I'd so hoped she'd wait until AFTER LO was here for that . . . oh well.
