Leaking.. Urine or Amniotic Fluid? Anyone else?

So lately I've been really damping my panty liners, which I figured would happen as pregnancy advances. Anyway just a while ago I got up from sitting for about 45 minutes straight and I felt like I was wet in between my legs (even pants felt damped) I went to the restroom and my panty liner was pretty wet. Undies weren't soaked but just felt damped. Has anyone else been experiencing major leaking? I'm concerned about it being amniotic fluid or if I'm urintaing myself without even knowing?

  • I did have one time where I wasn't sure, but I was 38 weeks along with DS then. The nurse I talked to told me that I would know the difference by the smell as odd as sniffing your unders sounds. The things babies make us do...

@EmbracingChange Believe or not I sniffed it lol. Didn't smell strange note like urine.

@lizardbreath14 that is exactly what I'm thinking and hoping it is. I think if it gets any worse I will call my ob tomorrow.
  • Could also be crotch sweat.  Gross, but true!  I second the smelling your undies method.  Also, when my water did break last time, while it was thin, it was also a lot slimier than urine. If this is watery rather than slimy, I think urine or sweat.

  • I'd guess discharge too. Amniotic fluid has a sweet smell.

  • I guess I might be a little paranoid. It probably is just discharge.
  • I will definitely do that @CDK211
  • Sending good thoughts your way. Sounds like you had a stress day.
  • I agree that it is probably discharge, but you should still call your OB in the morning. Also, up your water intake, you tend to have more discharge when you're dehydrated. If I get more discharge then normal I up my water intake and it helps a lot. Either way, I'm sending positive thoughts your way!
  • I'd get that checked out. I had the same thing and mentioned to the nurse and my in and they checked it out. They also did a swab to see if it was an infection as that can cause extra discharge. All was good thankfully.

I've been wearing panty liners for awhile now for this reason. Some days are wetter than others. It is possible to have a leak and not a gush. Have you smelled it? Sounds weird I know, but it might help in determining if it's urine or not.

ETA: just saw where you said you already sniffed it lol, sorry! Definitely call your OB and check but it's probably just increased discharge.

  • @Puka99 no gush feeling just really wet all if a sudden. I must admit that I haven't been drinking enough water so I am definitely increasing my water intake! Thanks for all the comments and well wishes.
  • Agree with PPs, this sounds like a combination of crotch sweat and discharge. My discharge soaked through my underwear and pants the other day. It totally looked like I peed myself.

  • probably just lots of discharge.  my discharge game has seriously been upped...my undies get pretty wet to the point of needing to change if I don't wear a panty liner some days.

  • So I called my OB and wants to see me. So I'm headed there for my appointment in an hour and half. I'll post an update later.
  • Hope your appointment goes well. I personally have had a lot more crotch sweat as of late. To the point of soaking a bit... Quite disgusting... but I hear its normal to be extra sweaty.
  • I'm glad you're going to see your OB. My SIL went in for her 36 week appointment and as an 'afterthought' at the very end of the appointment brought up that she thought she'd been peeing herself a little bit every day for the entire week. The OB immediately wanted to check it out, and it turned out to be a slow leak in her amniotic fluid that could have caused serious infection. She ended up getting induced right then.

Not trying to freak you out because chances are that it's still just discharge, but it's always better to get it checked out if you're unsure.

  • I had this same concern and asked my dr at my appt this week. She checked and said it's probably a combo of urine and discharge. Fun fun fun... But it gave me peace of mind to know so if anything check with your dr.

So it actually turned to to be a mild yeast infection sorry TMI. I actually freaked out about it but OB said it's very common during pregnancy. He prescribed some probiotic and cream. Thank goodness it wasn't anything serious.

    Edit.. Probiotic not antibiotic
  • Yay for nothing serious!  I didn't even think yeast infection and I'm in the middle of trying to get rid of one as well!  If it's not feeling better tomorrow I'm heading in for oral antibiotics, because this cream isn't cutting it and it's been five days.  Feel better soon!

He prescribed antibiotics for a yeast infection? Probiotics help, too. Try bio-k or The garden of life vaginal care probiotics. I've taken both and they work well.

P.s. Soooo glad it was nothing serious.

Shoot wait not antibiotic it was a probiotic. I freaked out that I just thought antibiotic but it's definitely not an antiobitoic.

Quote Fail:  I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, but that doesn't make any sense. Antibiotic would aggravate the yeast infection. Maybe it was a mild bacterial infection? (Very similar symptoms).  Or it was a yeast infection and he prescribed an antifungal like Diflucan?  Either way, I'm just glad it's not serious! And don't worry about TMI --- who the hell hasn't had this kind of stuff? We're all big girls here. :)

I'm an idiot!! It wasn't an antibiotic it was a probiotic. An antibiotic would definitely stir up some more issues. I edited my post:) I've never had a yeast infection before so I got a little worked up when he told me that I probably didn't even pay attention to what he said after. Glad DH was paying attention.
  • So glad to hear it isn't anything serious :) Hope it clears up soon

  • I've been having the same thing lately and started to get worried.
  • So glad someone else brought this up. Just recently my discharge/wetness has increased a lot. Nothing to the point of soaking a liner, but definitely a lot more than what I have been used to. Very thin as well. I almost went to the ER because I thought I was leaking fluid. I have increased my water and started doing kegel exercises. However, if it keeps up I am calling my dr.
