once upon a child

do you shop at once upon a child?  we only have one store around here and I'm finding them to be a ripoff.  I never really paid attention to the prices of the baby gear since I mostly buy my lo clothing here. however,  I sold some of my lo items to them and when they had the big clearance sale I was looking around and noticed the bouncer I sold to them. they were selling it for $5.00 more then if i were to buy it new!

I just saw on the Facebook page that they are selling brand new Cosco slim fold high chairs for 49.99. Walmart is selling the exact same chair for 30.00.

Maybe I'm wrong? but isn't the point of this store to buy baby clothes and gear at a discount since its (for the most part) USED?

wow, that's pretty messed up. Maybe whoever works their doesn't do their research, or, they're just trying to swindle moms into buying it, and keeping the profits to themselves. There's a few in my area, but i've never been there. There's a really good mom and pop children's consignment down the street that I love. I got most of DD's books and some of her christmas toys there.

It's funny that you brought this up, because whenever I hear that name, I just automatically think "high priced used kids stuff". Maybe it's because their in rich areas around me.

  • I commented about the price on the high chair on Facebook...waiting to see if they reply.

Ive only been to one other store in VA near my sister and i remember seeing bouncers for under $20, a rocking chair for $25 which i thought was a good deal.

I wish we had more kids consignment shops around here!
    • this was the response i got....

    • me:    I'm just curious...I've looked at the cosco slim fold high chair on other sites and they are selling for about $30....is there something different about these that would almost $20 more?

    • The reason why they are priced that way is that the small vendors, such as OUAC, cannot get the same prices as the big stores or websites….they buy in bulk and we can't. It is unfortunate, but we just don't have the buying power to negotiate a better deal! We brought them in as a convenience to our customers!
  • Lol, that response is absurd! No one will buy it then. You are better off selling on Craigslist or selling clothes on ebay.

  • I've only bought clothes from them, and usually their prices are very reasonable.

I just pay very close attention to stains and holes before buying, I have found several pieces I had to put back :(

The few times I glanced at gear though, it seemed very high for used stuff.

LOL, Ridiculous.  Reminds me of when I emailed someone selling an Exersaucer on CL for $70.  I asked her if she'd take less because the same Exersaucer was selling for brand new on Amazon for $75.  She said no because she paid $85.  Duh, lady, doesn't matter what YOU paid for it.  The current value is $75.

As for OUAC, I won't sell my stuff there.  I do much better selling big stuff on CL or through seasonal consignment sales.  I have only purchased games and puzzles there--those can be a good buy.

  • Ours rejected most of my newborn-6 month girl clothes because they were overflowing with baby girl clothes in those sizes.  I've taken my son's things (great condition and name brand) and they pay pittance for it.  Like $9 for a big tote.  Not worth it to me.  I do much better with consignment sales.

  • I was planning on going to the store tomorrow. I was going to look for a jogging stroller and a cheap walking toy. I found a $6 snow suit there at the beginning of winter. I don't think they are trying to give anyone a deal so I think its my responsibility to research prices.

  •  My dh brought stuff in to sell to them. I don't know how many outfits they took (i didn't count how many I got back). we sold my snap and go stroller, my bouncer, and some clothing and we got $98 back.

I don't know how it broke down since my dh did all the work. I know for a fact that they are selling the bouncer for $28 and you can buy it new from target for $23.
  • @nursemommy13 - If you decide to sell some of your clothes, check and see if there is a Facebook buy/sell/trade site in your area. I've had really good luck selling pretty much anything this way, and have also lucked out on some great deals for LO (I got a huge garbage bag full of name brand clothes for $50 - we counted over 200 pieces of clothing! Pretty much carried us through the winter and left me free to spend my money on fun outfits and toys instead of boring things like sleepers and onesies, lol)
