Anyone live in SC?

My DH and I are planning a spontaneous trip to SC this weekend to look at potential places to live next year. This weekend is the only time we are going to have to do this, and with the little research we've done we both really like the myrtle beach area and charleston. Any of you who live or have lived in SC have any advice, tips, or preferences about the state for us? (We definitely want to be near the coast and in an area where there are plenty of job opportunities)

Re: Anyone live in SC?

  • I don't, but Myrtle Beach is famous among my ILs for golfing. They regularly go on serious week-long golf trips to Myrtle Beach. So, if you like to golf and don't mind rubbing shoulders with tourists from Canada...

  • We have a time share in Myrtle Beach and go every year - also go to Charleston. I'd live in Charleston before MB.

  • I'm originally from the coastal area of SC. I would recommend the Charleston area over Myrtle Beach. Charleston has more job opportunities and is less of a tourist destination than MB. If you do want to look more at Myrtle I would look at the Murrells Inlet or Pawley's Island area. Those places are more residential.

Also, just as a heads up most of SC is covered in ice and with out power right now. Maneuvering around the state may be a little difficult.

  • My in laws live on Isle of Palms, very close to Charleston. We visit both quite often and I prefer Charleston!
  • Charleston is less "spring break" but you'll deal with tourists in both locations.

  • I live in SC but not near the coast. The Charleston metro area is huge (North Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, etc), so narrowing your search to that area doesn't narrow it down that much. Charleston is a great area. The only city I can think of on the coast other than MB and Chas is Georgetown, which is very historical.

  • I don't live in SC, but I used to live in southern NC. I agree with everyone else. I would definitely recommend Charleston. I have friends in the MB area and I can't stand going down there. it's nice to go, just to say you've been, but that's about it. During the spring and summer its nothing but traffic and tourists. There are some nice small costal towns, but not many have a lot in the way of jobs.
Just be careful going this weekend. They did get hit with some really nasty weather, but It should all be clear by then.
  • Thank you girls for the advice! I think we will definitely try to invest more time looking around in charleston then! I'm hoping the weather will be cleared up by then. We won't be getting there til Saturday morning so there's still a couple days
  • My sister and her husband just moved to Columbia, it's a couple of hours from the coast but it's a beautiful area!

  • Charleston is a beautiful area. DH and I would like to settle down there once he gets out of the military.

I live in Myrtle Beach now. I would say Charleston over Myrtle too. Charleston has a lot of cool places to check out! Myrtle is cool to visit but not the best to live in...

  • Charleston in general, but definitely Mt. Pleasant is a great place to live! Great schools, beaches, food and shopping!
  • I see your trip has come and gone but my two cents worth is Folly Beach it's near enough to Charleston for a commute if you had a job there but seemed to be even more laid back than Charleston (though it has been a while since I was there in 2001).  Good luck and let us know what you decide!!

  • I used to spend my summers in the Myrtle Beach area with my grandparents, I loved it down there, it is pretty touristy though, and the infrastructure is pretty limited.  They actually lived a little north up in the Little River area which was a little more secluded.  I've only visited Charleston a couple of times but it was lovely.  I would imagine a lot more expensive there then MB though.

  • Thank you ladies! So we focused on and loved the Charleston area but found that it's just not a place we want to live. It's hard for me to describe exactly why, but we both didn't get the "I love this place, let's move here!" Feeling that we expected. Also the schools weren't very great there. We did love the Mount Pleasant area though! So beautiful and peaceful and the beaches there and very nice. The schools are a little better there and we liked the feeling of that town better. I did love Folly beach as well! Since we didn't have too much time there it was hard to see everything.. But we decided we want to look at some towns further south. We did some research on an app called zillow (it's amazing, u should all check it out) and we found some towns close to hilton head and the Georgia border that have great schools, great jobs, and beautiful towns! So we'll probably be making another trip eventually! :)
