need bottle help....ahhhhhh

Hi there mommies so im officially beyond overwhelmed.....I have lots of questions

what is the best breast pump you all recommend?  Ill be travelling with it a lot too when I go back to work...

which is the best bottles to use along with still pumping and breastfeeding?  When I go back to work im going to have a nanny that will be using the bottles

I was looking at Madela pump thus far but it doesn't look like they have many bottle options....iv read places about buying slow flow nipples....it seems madela does not have that.....which bottles can I use that will pump right into the bottle?

Is it worth buying a sanitizer or dishwasher attachment to clean bottles?

thanks for any input!!

Re: need bottle help....ahhhhhh

  • I have the Medela Freestyle pump and will use Dr. Brown's bottles.  It's really not that bothersome, I just pump into the Medela bottles and then either transfer to a freezer bag or directly into the Dr. Brown's bottle for DH or daycare to feed.

Definitely worth the dishwasher attachment, IMO.  Cleaning all of the bottle parts manually is really annoying.  I would load them in the dishwasher and then dry them on a drying rack.

I used a hospital grade pump provided by work at work and a manual lansinoh at home. I definitely recommend getting a manual in addition to your main pump for when you travel. Then you don't have to worry about batteries, it's lightweight and much more discreet if you have to pump on the plane and they're only $20-$30.

We used the first years Breastflow bottles.i always transferred pumped milk into freezer bags for storage (also way lighter than carrying 6 bottles back and forth from work) then transferred to feeding bottles when needed.

You don't need a sanitizer but do get a dishwasher basket.

I had a medela pump and liked it. As for bottles I think any bottles with a standard neck size will attach...but there are some adapters for using the pump with other bottles. I got one from Avent.

You can wash the bottles in the dishwasher. If you want to sanatize you can also get steam clean bags that can be used in the microwave. Medela and a couple other companies make those

I've heard to use slow flow and wide nipples if you're bf'ing and I've had luck with that.

  • I pumped for a year with the Medela PISA, it is a great pump but I wish I had bought the freestyle.  For bottles we tried the Medela bottles but the nipples didn't agree with LO, lots of choking.  We had great success with Avent natural (DS was in daycare), and I never had any problems going back and forth from bottle to breast.

  • Yes, any standard neck size bottles will fit with the medela. I only ever had maybe 2 or 3 sets of basic bottle just for pumping. like walmart cheapy bottles a and always transferred the milk into milk bags. And for feedings we used Tommee Tippee bottles when we needed to. Loved them! We only used bottles when I was at work 3 days a week. Other than that I directly nursed him and we never had a hard time switching between the two.
  • I used a Medela pISA for my first and bought connectors to pump right into the Avent bottles.

  • I have a Medela Freestyle it's wonderful and very compact. The pump comes with a couple bottles and at least one slow flow nipple. We upgraded to the fast around 4 months. We never needed other bottles because she was fine with the one it came with. It also comes with a cooler bag and ice pack for pumping on the go. Super convenient. Also, if you EBF you will never need anything larger than those 5 oz bottles.

We have a steam sterilizer and a bottle drying rack. I really liked having both. I did bottle/nipple dishes way more than I ran the dishwasher.

    We have these:
