Sip cup conundrum

Morning ladies!

It's the great cup conundrum :( J used to drink decently (2-3 oz) with his meals from the Avent "my first" sip cup. I'd of course help him tip it up but we would leave it on his tray and he'd reach for it and sip it. Now, straight out refusal! Pushes it off his tray and swats it away every time I offer it. It's still BM mixed with a touch of water, nothing's changed there... Ive tried other cups, straws, hard plastic, etc and no avail. I've even tried a little juice with water. He's been a touch constipated so I've been trying to up liquids during meals.

I wonder what gives?!

Sorry /end 5am "ish" pumping rant :/

Re: Sip cup conundrum

  • Could the flow be too slow? I let A sip out of my water glass one night when we were out because I forgot his cup. Now he really likes drinking that way and gets frustrated having to suck so hard to get the water out of his sippy cup.

  • That could be the case, at this point he won't even try! He's never taken bottles so I'm definitely unfamiliar with flow etc. We now have like 5 different sip cups... Back to the drawing board! I'll definitely try to find one with a quicker/less sucking flow. Thanks! :)

    +1

A friend suggested that we get one that isn't spill proof so we ended up getting a cheap one from the dollar store that leaks and she loves it! She tips it and grabs for it and everything.

  • Can I hijack this post and ask what are all of you putting in the sippy cup?  If I began introducing a sippy cup (she turns 8 months next week) what is your advice on what I should start with? She is FF. Doing awesome with solids.  She's starting to grab at things and feed herself now.

Just water. He made faces at first, and choked quite a bit, but now he loves it!

Eta: I give it to him at meals and sometimes if he has hiccups.

  • @CatalinaPink  and @Cricket81  How much water do you offer?  Do you notice any changes in bowel movements?
  • I pretty much fill the cup, but only because if I don't it is hard for him to tip it high enough to get any water out. He only drinks 1-2 oz. out of it, though. I started water at the same time I started solids, so I don't know what bms would look like without it, but LO has never had constipation issues.

  • BM and water. Usually 2:1 although he has been drinking none as of late. I tried the removal of the no spill portion. Got about two "sips" then started refusing again. Pushing away and trying to knock it off if on his tray (drama king much??) Did this twice today with the same reaction...

At least I know it isn't a flow issue :/

Back to the drawing board! Any other ideas?
  • She won't drink from a sippy cup. They are all spill proof and I even find drinking from them difficult. I should try a dollar store one. She will drink out of a regular cup and has a few sips of water with her meals
  • Nuks are spill proof but without any flow stoppers. My LO loves hers. Maybe try a different brand?
