Femur length at 24wks good indicator of height?

I know these are not the things to be concerned about-but I am curious by nature. My baby is measuring in the 11th percentile in Femur Length and I wonder-does this necessarily mean he will be short? I am 5'4" and my SO is 5'7" but I have a sibling that is 6'1" and other tall-ish family members. How accurate is this measurement in predicting height in adulthood?

  • Aww, darn. I got really excited when the did the measurements today. My husband and I are both 5'6. We were hoping it meant we.were going to have a tall kid...

  • my sister was born heaviest and small I was less heavy but bigger when I was born, she was tiny growing up I was much taller andbigger than everyone else of my age but comes puberty she shot up like no body's business while I kind of just paused at my height (5'6") and she is now the tallest in the house and has heavier bones than I do (bigger wrists/ankles, wider fingers, etc) we wear the same size pants but her shoulders and torso are much wider bone wise so she's one size bigger than I am although she is an A cup and I'm a C cup.

my brother was very average at birth then a little taller than other kids his age but just a little and then he shot up like there is no tomorrow and kept getting taller up into his early 20s and it didn't seem to want to stop! he is now 24 years old and is 6'2"

so I wouldn't count on anything really to determine height. I'm personally hoping my baby is born small in size, not pre-mature, but to be of a smaller build like her dad because I struggled growing up I looked like I was 3 years older than kids in my class (I now look younger and smaller than other women my age) but I grew up so fast as a kid and then just stopped. It was hard for me to find clothes in the kids section really early on and shoes too because I had bigger feet. I really don't want her to go through what I went through, going shopping and coming back home in tears at the age of 10 because nothing fits and what does fit is too old looking and wasn't from the kids section.

  • I'm high risk for low birth weight, and my doc seems to be using it as an indicator of normal growth.  My last one was on the small side, but she said that once they start being able to estimate weight it's a better indicator.

  • My cousin measured very very small at birth to the point where his mom actually dressed him in doll clothes. He's now 6'3. Best to go by doubling the height at 2 years

Normal growth and adult size are two completely different things. Yes, they measure belly, head, legs and arms to get fetal size (I am monitored and have had 2 IUGR pregnancies) and monitor fetal growth. These measurements will tell you nothing about adult size.
