Changing table

If this has been asked before please feel free to send me in the right direction.

I'm wondering if a changing table is necessary. Obviously I know they aren't a must. But STM+ would you recommend them. We live in a two story house, LO's room and our room are both on the second floor. I can see me using it for the middle of the night but I don't see me walking up the stairs during the day for every changing. ??? Now I could be wrong.

Thanks

Re: Changing table

  • I'm sure it's been asked before but I don't remember when so I'll play nice and answer.

I personally don't think a changing table is nescessary.  We got one with DS, changed him on it for a few months (until he got too wiggly) and then just started changing him on the floor after that.  His changing table sat in his room until recently and we would just throw his clothes on top and basically just use it a storage center.

Even though we already have one, we decided to take it apart and put it in our attic instead of using it for LO because neither of us think it has much use, especially long term use.

  • I think it's really common now to just put a changing pad on top of a dresser. Everyone can use a dresser in the baby's room, and having the pad on top is nice for when you don't want to climb down onto the floor. You can secure the pad to the back of the dresser, too, so it won't slip off.

If anything, I'd consider a changing table downstairs. Especially if you're staying home, you'll most likely spend a lot more time (and therefore a lot more diaper changes) downstairs.
  • I'm a FTM, but from everything I've read you can absolutely live without one. We just got a dresser and will be putting a changing pad on top of it. No reason to have a whole separate piece of furniture.

  • I was against getting one because I thought we wouldn't use it. However, DH talked me into getting one that is a dresser/changer combo. For us, it is worth it for the storage alone.

  • We also just put a changing pad on the dresser. But I know a few people with 2 story or very large homes that liked having a changing table in the living area. Our house is a ranch and not huge, so I don't mind walking to her room for changes.
  • We had a changing table for DD, but we're ditching it for LO. Our nursery isn't very big, so this time we went with the pad on top of the dresser set up. To answer more directly, I'm with PP's - no, you don't really need one.

  • We still use ours everyday and ds is 2.5.

  • When watching my friends kids I never, not once, used the changing table and even forgot they had one.

  • I am a change table lover! We still use it with B and he is 2. Is it necessary, probably not, however it is my preference.

  • We have a changing table in her nursery since we went with a tall chest of drawers (space saving) instead of a dresser. We also have a pack n play set up downstairs so we don't have to walk upstairs to put her in her crib/bassinet when she goes to sleep. There is a diaper changing attachment on it as well.
  • This is my third- I didn't have one with my first- I had one with my second but didn't use it too much- more used the changing pad on the floor.
This time I got a change table/baby bath combo that can be wheeled around the house. It was only $99 and I think it will be really useful as last time DH had to carry the bath to empty it and also it has awesome storage for nappies, wipes and bath stuff underneath.
  • Thanks everyone! I'm thinking dresser with a pad is the way to go for us. Thanks for all your input and opinions.
  • There are a lot of different alternatives out there to the typical changing tables, I'm sure you can find some cool ideas on Pinterest now that mom's are being more creative with how to accommodate their homes for baby.

In the baby room we purchased a large dresser and placed the changing pad on it, making that the changing station. However the nursery is on the other side of the house, and I totally get where you are coming from not wanting to trek in the middle of the night all over the house. So to help with that we got this:
    image
I have it set up next to my bed and this is where the baby will sleep for the first couple of weeks while we get adjusted to his feeding schedule and he's still really little. The basket to the right is a changing station, with pockets on the side. So I'll just change him right in there and keep supplies nearby. Hope that helps!

  • We got a crib/changer combo because we wanted the extra storage for cloth diapers.
  • FTM, but I plan to use ours at least for the first few months.  I think it will be a back saver.  But I am sure as LO gets bigger and mobile, I'll likely just plop her down whereever I can catch her to change her.

Our nursery isn't huge and we don't have room for a seperate changing table, especially since it will become obsolete once we stop using it as much.  So we just got a dresser that is big enough to put a changing pad on top.  That might be a good solution for you, so if you find you don't use it as much, it's still a functional piece of furniture.

  • We loved our changing table so much that we bought a second one so we can still have one in DS room and one in the nursery. Ds doesn't lay still anywhere but there and I need the storage for each of their diapers and a place to hang the wet bag.

  • We have a pad on the dresser in the nursery. We got a separate changing table for the living room, since I don't want to have carry both babies around every time one needs changed.

  • I've put a changing pad on a dresser every time. I wouldn't do it any other way.

  • I agree with PP's, although I'm a FTM. We have a tiny house and don't have the room (or desire) for a separate changing table. Instead, we got a low, long dresser that LO can use for his entire childhood and a changing pad that will attach to the dresser. This is what we have:

https://www.target.com/p/stork-craft-aspen-dresser-and-changer-combo/-/A-14493261#prodSlot=medium_1_15   which looks like it will work perfectly with the top of it having a short back and side part that sticks up which we can butt the changing pad up against and still have room to put a basket with diapers, wipes, etc. on the top next to the pad. Once LO is too heavy for me to lift up there, we will change him on the floor on a blanket....but hopefully by the time he gets that big he will be potty trained. *cross fingers*

  • we have one but we did not have a dresser that would accommodate a changing pad. DD was not ever an issue on it and it really got used.

I am this time converting a piece of furniture in the living room into a changing station downstairs this time too!

  • I'm on two levels also. My plan now is pad on dresser for upstairs, stocked changing table downstairs. I'm also doing a bassinet/pack n play downstairs also. I know I will not want to go upstairs every time.

My only question now is how I set up in my bedroom, since the plan is to have LO in our bedroom to start. Need to think about that more.

  • Definitely go with a changing pad on top of the dresser. Saves wasted money and can be used for years down the road.
  • We were not going to get one at all because we just didn't think it would be necessary. Well someone got us one anyway so we figured might as well use it.

While I'm sure we will change baby on it from time to time, I was really happy with how much storage it added for us. We have all the diapers, wipes, butt paste and other misc. things stored in there. After we got it all filled up I had to ask myself what on earth we would have done with all that stuff had we not gotten it.

Seriously our once "spacious" ranch house that happily fit the two of us, seems so very small with no storage space now :)

  • I'm a FTM, but we bought a dresser and will use that as a changing table. LO's room is small, and we thought we would get more bang for our buck to just use the dresser as the changing table.

  • DD has an antique armoire in her room instead of a dresser, so I got a changing table and love it. For this baby we're using a dresser so we'll put a changing pad on top. I know lots of people just change them on the floor or a bed, but I hate having to do that. On the floor she knows she can escape (she's 17mo now) and the bed hurts my back because it's not high enough.

  • We have a changing table dresser combo. We bought it when our first was born and have used it ever since. I love it because I don't have to bend down and it keeps little one from running off during diaper changes when they hit toddlerhood. I still use it with my ds and will use it for this little one too.

If anything, I would at least recommend a changing pad on a dresser.
