Sick family member- WWYD?

DH and I are planning on going to MIL and FIL's house on Saturday and spending the night, along with all of his other siblings and their families. I go on facebook today and see SIL posted yesterday that she has influenza. I called DH and asked him if she and her FI are still coming, and he said to his knowledge yes and that it isn't a big deal so long as she doesn't touch the baby. I feel like if she's there, she's going to be coughing or sneezing and what not and her germs are going to find a way to DD, and I really don't want her to get sick, although I don't know how long she's been sick exactly or how long the flu is contagious.

Would you go and just ask SIL to keep her distance from the baby? Or would you stay home?

  • Agree with PP's. Honestly this wouldn't even be up for discussion at my house. DH and I won't allow any sick family member around either of the kids.
  • I won't let anyone hold LO if they haven't had the flu shot. Wouldn't bring her near sick people. DH was sick for a week straight. LO and I slept in another room and he didn't even hold her the whole week. It was hard but LO getting that sick would be much worse!

My mom was here last week and had a cold - she eire a mask and gloves to get near the baby. I would not get near someone with the flu and i have already kept people out if my house for less

  • I would absolutely stay home. It is not worth the risk.

I will say though that if it were me that were sick, I would also stay home so that I didn't risk infecting everyone else. We had a family gathering while I was still pregnant and my cousin was sick, and her and my aunt stayed home because they knew I was coming and didn't want to risk me getting sick.

  • Stay home for sure. I am beyond afraid of flu for babies.

I agree, I'm kind of surprised she's going if it's really influenza and not just a cold or a little bug.

Thanks, all, for weighing in. I'll have to get myself a spine and tell DH we are simply not going to take the risk. Wish me luck. :)

  • My mom is staying with us right now from far away.she came down with the sniffles/cold 2days into her visit. From the second she mentioned she was starting to feel sick she has worn a mask and constantly has to wash her hands/ wipe down knobs and no holding baby... It sucks but He's just so little:( and that's just a cold... Flu... no way!
  • We just left the hospital after a five day stay (including picu time) for RSV and I only took Noah to my m&m's twice. I'd stay home for sure.

  • You do not want a newborn with the flu. Her touching the baby isn't the only way for baby to get infected. Your SIL could cough or sneeze or touch you or something you're near and then you could pass it to baby yourself.
